Over a year ago, Netflix announced it was working with a major Hollywood producer on a new live-action Scooby-Doo series. Greg Berlanti, known for his work on the Arrowverse, was set to executive produce, with Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg as showrunners. There haven’t been many updates since then, but now we have the first news in over a year, and it suggests the show is progressing well.
Netflix’s upcoming live-action Scooby-Doo series has its first star! Mckenna Grace will play Daphne in the eight-episode show, as reported by Deadline. Grace excitedly confirmed the news on social media, expressing her gratitude and enthusiasm. Now that Grace is cast, announcements about the rest of the Mystery, Inc. gang are expected soon. These reveals could also give fans a better idea of the show’s overall tone, which should please horror enthusiasts.
Netflix’s Scooby-Doo Adds Mckenna Grace as Daphne

At just nineteen years old, Mckenna Grace has already starred in several successful films, including Captain Marvel, I, Tonya, Ready Player One, and last year’s Regretting You. She’s set to appear in the upcoming Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, and interestingly, this isn’t her first time portraying Daphne Blake – she previously voiced the character as a child in the animated movie Scoob!
A significant part of Grace’s career has been in horror, which suggests the new Scooby-Doo series might have a spooky tone. She’s appeared in many horror films, including popular titles like James Wan’s Malignant, Amityville: The Awakening, two Ghostbusters movies, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, the upcoming Scream 7, and even a remake of The Bad Seed with a sequel. She also has horror experience on Netflix, playing Theo in The Haunting of Hill House and appearing as young Sabrina in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
The new live-action Scooby-Doo series casting an actress known for horror roles suggests it might actually be a bit frightening. Following the popularity of shows like Wednesday on Netflix, it’s logical they’d want to create another reboot in a similar vein, and a scarier take on Scooby-Doo fits well. The show will focus on how the Mystery, Inc. gang first came together, beginning with Shaggy and Daphne investigating a mysterious event involving a lost puppy who may have witnessed something supernatural. After almost a year of silence, the series seems to be progressing well and is shaping up to be quite promising.
