Despite strong positive reviews – a 90% rating from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes – Netflix has cancelled a recently released show. While Netflix is often criticized for ending original series prematurely, this situation feels different. It appears that social and political issues likely contributed to the cancellation, happening much sooner than expected.
The Netflix comedy series Boots premiered on October 9, 2025, but was canceled after just two months, on December 12, 2025. The show, based on Greg Cope White’s memoir The Pink Marine, is set in 1990 Louisiana and follows Cameron Cope (played by Miles Heizer), a teenager hiding his sexuality. When Cameron’s best friend, Ray McAffey (Liam Oh), joins the Marines, Cameron enlists too. This creates a difficult situation, as LGBTQ+ individuals were prohibited from serving in the military at the time, forcing Cameron to conceal his identity while navigating basic training and avoiding the scrutiny of his drill instructor, Sergeant Liam Robert Sullivan (Max Parker). Throughout the rigorous training, Cameron forms close bonds with fellow recruits who are all pushed to their limits.
Netflix’s Boots Was Cancelled After Political Backlash
I’ve been following the changes happening in the American military since 2025, and it’s been a pretty big shift. It started with President Trump and Secretary of Defense Hegseth making some major moves – they even renamed the Department of Defense to the Department of War! Then, Hegseth introduced a whole new set of rules for how soldiers should act and what values the military should prioritize. Honestly, it all felt a bit sudden, especially with everything else going on. The show Boots came along right when these changes were really starting to take hold.
Given the situation, it’s easy to see why the Trump White House and Pentagon weren’t thrilled that the Netflix series Boots launched around the same time they were promoting their new military messaging. In October, the Pentagon’s press secretary, Kingsley Wilson, even publicly called Boots “woke garbage” in a statement to EW.
Wilson continued by saying that the U.S. military, under President Trump and Secretary Hegseth, is refocusing on traditional values of strength and skill. He emphasized that standards are high, consistent, and apply equally to everyone, regardless of gender. He stated they won’t lower these standards to accommodate any particular ideology, contrasting this with Netflix, which he criticized for consistently creating and showing content he considers to be overly focused on social and political issues, even for children.
Boots Had Strong Numbers

Looking at the viewership numbers, the decision to cancel the show seems questionable. Boots received strong reviews and averaged 9.4 million viewers in its first week – a number likely boosted by the controversy it generated. It remained in Netflix’s Top 10 for four weeks, reaching number two, indicating a successful debut for a new series. The show also became a popular topic on social media due to the political discussion surrounding it, suggesting it had staying power.
The show Boots features Miles Heizer, Liam Oh, Kieron Moore, Dominic Goodman, Angus O’Brien, Blake Burt, Max Parker, Rico Paris, Vera Farmiga, Cedrick Cooper, Ana Ayora, and Nicholas Logan. While Sony Pictures Television attempted to keep the cast available for a potential revival, those options have now expired. It appears unlikely that Boots will be picked up by another network or streaming service.
