Adapting anime into live-action shows is a popular trend, and Netflix has been a major player. They’ve already released live-action versions of series like One Piece, Yu Yu Hakusho, Kakegurui, and Avatar: The Last Airbender with mixed results. Now, with One Piece returning for a second season this spring, another anime is getting the live-action treatment. If you enjoy intense anime fights, get ready to see some epic battles brought to life by the story of the “strongest creature in the world.”
For decades, fans have loved the intense fighting action of Baki the Grappler, thanks to its creator, Keisuke Itagaki. This year, the series is making a comeback with a new anime season on Netflix called Baki-Dou, where Baki will face off against the legendary swordsman Musashi Miyamoto. Plus, a live-action stage play, Baki The Grappler Stage 2 – The Most Evil Death Row Prisoner Arc, is also coming this summer. The play will be performed from July 23rd to 28th at the Shinjuku FACE stage in Tokyo, and Yugo Sato is returning to play the role of Baki. Here’s a first look at him in the role!

What is The Convict Arc?

The latest Baki Hanma arc, “The Most Evil Death Row Prisoner,” features a group of incredibly strong prisoners escaping to challenge Baki and his friends. This arc marked a significant return for the series on Netflix, after a previous OVA and two anime seasons—originally released in the early 2000s thanks to TMS Entertainment—introduced the world to the character known as the Son of the Ogre.
Last year, we at egmr.ru spoke with Yuki Yokoi, Assistant General Manager of the Business IP Department at Akita Soten. Having worked on the Baki Hanma anime for a long time, Yokoi was happy to talk about many things, including what other anime series he’d like to see appear in the Baki universe.
I’ve been involved with both the Baki and Kengan Ashura anime, both of which you can find on Netflix. Interestingly, the creator of Kengan Ashura, Yabako Sandrovich, is actually a big fan of Baki. A close working relationship with Sho Kobayashi, the editor for Kengan Ashura, led to this collaborative project. I’m hoping we can do more of these kinds of team-ups in the future, but only if the series really fit together creatively. As a fan myself, I know Itagaki-sensei also worked on the Garouden manga, which is also on Netflix, and I think a crossover between those worlds would be amazing. That’s just a personal hope, though!
