Netflix’s Most Action Packed Anime Needs a Renewal

Netflix is set to release a lot of exciting anime content this year, including several original series. Next month, viewers can look forward to titles like The Ramparts of Ice, Dandelion, and a new arc of One Piece called Elbaph. One of the year’s biggest anime, Baki The Grappler, has already launched its first episodes, though the release was a bit unconventional. After being available on Netflix for several years, this latest installment of Baki is hoping to regain its popularity.

The latest installment of the Baki franchise, Baki-Dou: The Invincible Samurai, recently hit Netflix. It not only features returning characters, but also introduces a powerful new enemy. The series brings back the legendary samurai Musashi Miyamoto – this time through a blend of science and the supernatural. A research facility cloned a body for him, and a spiritual medium restored his soul. All thirteen episodes are currently available, but the ending strongly suggests a second season is necessary to satisfy fans – including us!

Baki Must Return

So, how does Baki-Dou: The Invincible Samurai conclude? Musashi Miyamoto has been powerfully defeating opponents, including many of Baki’s friends. He seemed to finally meet his equal when he fought Yujiro Hanma, Baki’s incredibly strong father, known as the Ogre. However, their fight didn’t have a clear winner. Izo Motobe unexpectedly intervened, jumping in to protect Yujiro from Musashi’s attack, much to the Ogre’s displeasure.

Throughout the first season of this follow-up series, Motobe has been working to rescue his friends from Musashi, even battling and defeating them in the process. He managed to overcome Jack Hammer, also known as Jack Hanma – Baki’s dangerous brother – despite Jack’s size and aggressive nature. The season ends with Izo and Musashi still at large, leaving viewers on a cliffhanger, and a second season hasn’t been announced yet.

Baki’s Wild Ride

Watching the first season, it was clear they covered a lot of ground from the original story, but Musashi’s story still has a long way to go if they make another season – and it sounds like they might! One fight I’m really hoping to see animated is between Baki and Miyamoto. They had a quick clash already, and a proper rematch is definitely needed. It’s interesting because even though ‘Son of the Ogre’ is considered the strongest being alive, he couldn’t even come close to defeating the swordsman. That creates a really compelling challenge for Baki as he moves forward.

Although it’s not official yet, Keisuke Itagaki, the writer of the series, has created additional story arcs for the manga. After the battle with Musashi concludes, the story introduces a legendary sumo wrestler as the next opponent for the characters. The narrative then focuses on Jack Hammer’s efforts to prove himself and reach a skill level previously attained only by his father and brother, Yujiro and Baki. Given the anime’s popularity, it’s likely that the entire manga series will eventually be adapted into animated form.
