Netflix’s Most Controversial Animated Series is Now Gone

Recently, several streaming services have removed original animated shows, often for financial reasons or to move content to other platforms. This creates uncertainty for these projects, and now one of Netflix’s most popular—and sometimes debated—animated series has been removed from the service. This is especially surprising given plans for the franchise in 2026, and it means viewers can no longer watch complete seasons of the show.

The animated series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power originally aired on Netflix from 2015 to 2020, lasting five seasons. Now that the show’s agreement with Netflix has ended—as it was a co-production with DreamWorks Animation—it’s currently unavailable on any streaming service. Unlike some other animated shows that have moved to new platforms, She-Ra isn’t currently available anywhere except for a DVD set containing the first three seasons, and only one season is available for digital purchase.

She-Ra’s Future

Following the cancellation of She-Ra And The Princesses of Power, creator ND Stevenson expressed hope that the show’s story would live on. Stevenson explained that the removal from Netflix was expected, as it’s happened to other Dreamworks series when their licensing agreements end. They emphasized that showrunners have no say in these decisions, and while they hope the series will be released on DVD, they aren’t certain. Stevenson also noted the tendency for queer art to be forgotten, urging fans to watch and preserve the show while they still can, as its future is now in the hands of the audience.

A live-action Masters of the Universe movie is coming to theaters this year from Amazon. Although it hasn’t been officially announced, She-Ra has always been connected to He-Man’s story, so she might make an appearance. Plus, Amazon is also developing a live-action She-Ra series, with Heidi Schreck (known for Billions and Nurse Jackie) as showrunner. Details about the series are currently scarce, but the upcoming He-Man movie could lead to more announcements soon.

Interestingly, a hint of She-Ra also appeared in the Netflix series Masters of the Universe: Revolution. The show ended with a scene suggesting Adora might return as a villain, but with the series’ future uncertain, this storyline might never be explored.
