To succeed in TV streaming, a service needs both popular original shows and timeless classics. While Netflix used to dominate the market, it now faces much more competition. In recent years, they’ve lost popular sci-fi series like Star Trek, The Twilight Zone, and Lost to rival platforms. However, Netflix recently added a new title that shows they’re still a strong force in classic science fiction.
Netflix added all 10 seasons of Stargate SG-1 on February 15th, giving sci-fi fans a lot of content to enjoy. This comes at a great time, as Amazon Prime Video is working on a new Stargate series. Whether you’re a longtime fan or completely new to the show, now is the perfect opportunity to watch or re-watch the original series.
Netflix Snags Classic Sci-Fi Series Stargate SG-1 Ahead of Prime Video Revival
I first discovered Stargate SG-1 when it premiered back in 1997, as a follow-up to the original movie, and I was instantly hooked! It ran for an amazing ten seasons, totaling 214 episodes. I loved watching Colonel Jack O’Neill, played by Richard Dean Anderson, along with Samantha Carter, Daniel Jackson, and Teal’c explore incredible new worlds through this ancient network of stargates. The franchise grew with Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe, but sadly, after Universe ended in 2011, things have been pretty quiet, except for one webseries that didn’t really catch on. It’s a universe I still really enjoy revisiting!
Fans had been hoping for a return to the Stargate universe for years. In November 2025, Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios made it official: a new Stargate series is in production and will stream exclusively on Prime Video. This won’t be a complete restart of the story, but rather a continuation of the existing Stargate timeline. Leading the project is Martin Gero, a longtime writer and producer on previous Stargate shows like SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe. He’s serving as the series’ creator, executive producer, and showrunner.
During a recent livestream with GateWorld’s Darren Sumner, producer Joseph Mallozzi explained that the new project aims to satisfy both dedicated Stargate fans and new viewers. He wants longtime fans to feel this is the continuation they’ve hoped for, while also making it accessible to people unfamiliar with the original series—they shouldn’t need to watch hundreds of episodes to enjoy it. It’s a good strategy to broaden the audience, but whether the team can create something that appeals to everyone remains to be seen.
Work on the new project is starting now, with the story being written. Experts predict it will be released in late 2027 or early 2028, although there’s no confirmed date yet. Details about the plot and actors are still secret, but early information indicates it will remain true to the original Stargate idea – focusing on ancient portals that connect different worlds – and will use cutting-edge visual effects to create a truly captivating experience.
While we wait for more Stargate, good news! Both longtime fans and anyone new to the series can now watch all 200+ episodes of SG-1 on Netflix. It’s a perfect way to dive in or revisit a classic.
