Netflix’s New Anime Is Officially a Hit With 1.5 Million Views

The anime film 100 Meters, based on the popular manga by Uoto, was released in Japanese theaters in September 2025. Though the manga originally ran from 2018 to 2019, it didn’t receive widespread international attention. Uoto is famous for Orb: On the Movements of the Earth, an award-winning manga that was adapted into an anime series in 2024. While complex, the Orb anime was highly praised as one of the best short series in recent years. Just a few months after Orb finished, Uoto surprised audiences with another compelling story and beautiful animation in 100 Meters. The film became available on Netflix worldwide on December 31, 2025.

According to Netflix’s fan site, Tudum, the anime film 100 Meters was the sixth most popular non-English movie on the platform between December 29th and January 4th, earning 1.5 million views. It was the only animated film to make the top 10. The movie also ranked second in Japan, just behind Kyojo Reunion. This success is particularly impressive given the limited marketing, and its popularity continues to grow. Netflix Anime shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), where fans enthusiastically praised the film. The account also highlighted the film’s beautiful hand-drawn animation in a post on January 8, 2026, referencing an earlier post from the anime’s official account in August 2025, further building excitement.

Will There Be a Sequel to The 100 Meters Film?

The movie just came out, and while it’s popular, a sequel is highly unlikely. The film is based on a short comic, and it’s already told the complete story, although there’s potential for more. Unfortunately, the original comic didn’t have any sequels or related stories, so it’s doubtful the story will be continued.

The film stands on its own as a brilliant story about the fierce competition between rivals and the pursuit of dreams. It focuses on Togashi, a naturally gifted runner who has always easily won races. But his life changes when a new student, Komiya, arrives and shares his passion for running.

I’m completely captivated by the story of Komiya! He’s got this incredible drive, but honestly, he just doesn’t have the natural talent to make it as a pro athlete. That’s where Togashi comes in – he decides to mentor Komiya, but also to help him find something else he can pour his heart into, something he absolutely has to win at. It’s amazing because years later, they end up facing off against each other on the track! As they push towards their original goal, they really start to show who they truly are, and it’s a powerful rivalry built on a shared past.
