Netflix’s upcoming spy thriller, The Lords’ Day, has cast an actor who was once a popular choice to play James Bond. A first glimpse of the show has also been released.
Since Daniel Craig finished his run as James Bond with the 2021 film No Time to Die, the producers have been looking for a new actor to take on the role. Amazon MGM Studios now has complete creative control, and as of now, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Callum Turner, and Damson Idris are considered leading candidates.
Netflix recently revealed that Damson Idris will star in their upcoming spy thriller, The Lords’ Day. The announcement, posted on X (formerly Twitter), playfully stated, “Damson Idris requests the pleasure of your company for THE LORDS’ DAY, a new political thriller series coming to Netflix.”
A first-look photo was released showing Idris Elba in a dark suit, holding the script for the first episode of The Lords’ Day and looking directly into the camera with an intense gaze.
What Is The Lords’ Day About?
The upcoming series is based on Michael Dobbs’ 2007 novel. It stars Damson Idris as a British spy trapped inside Parliament during a dangerous standoff. The story explores themes of loyalty and sacrifice as he tries to save his country, according to the official description.
The Lords’ Day is the first book in a series of novels by Harry Jones, followed by The Edge of Madness (2008), The Reluctant Hero (2010), Old Enemies (2011), The Sentimental Traitor (2012), and A Ghost at the Door (2013). If the new Netflix series does well, these books could be adapted into future seasons.

The British actor is famous for his roles in the FX series Snowfall and the hit movie F1 (2025). He’s often mentioned as a possible next James Bond, but he’s said those rumors aren’t true. Despite this, he remains one of the favorites to land the iconic role, according to betting odds.
Idris Elba’s role in the new Netflix spy thriller is likely to boost his chances of becoming the next James Bond, much like Daniel Craig’s performance in Layer Cake helped him land the role.
