Following the big success of Netflix’s One Piece, the streaming service is creating more live-action adaptations. A recent project has improved on an area where the first season of One Piece struggled. While the One Piece adaptation finally broke the trend of bad anime-to-live-action remakes, it wasn’t without issues. Adapting a story with such a long source material – over 100 chapters and episodes in the manga and anime – proved difficult, and some parts of the story had to be cut to fit the series.
The first season of this One Piece adaptation didn’t have quite as much action as fans hoped. Even the actors, like Mackenyu who plays Zoro, have suggested they’re aiming for more action in the next season. While it’s still uncertain how Season 2 will improve, the new Netflix series The Last Samurai Standing offers a great example of how to successfully bring action-packed sequences to life in a live-action manga or anime adaptation.
Netflix’s Last Samurai Standing Provides a Perfect Representation of How One Piece Should Handle Action

Netflix’s popular new series, Last Samurai Standing, is based on a novel and manga by Shogo Imamura. It tells the story of a samurai struggling to provide for his family in a time when samurai are no longer in demand. To earn money, he enters a dangerous series of fights against other samurai, all battling for a grand prize. The show is filled with intense sword fights and bloody combat, and the Netflix adaptation delivers on the action, often exceeding viewers’ expectations.
The sword fights in this show are exceptionally well done, setting a great standard for how action should be handled in live-action adaptations. Netflix’s One Piece could really benefit from taking note, particularly when it comes to Zoro, a proud samurai swordsman who deserves to be showcased as prominently as the hero in Last Samurai Standing. The next season of One Piece would be the ideal time to improve in this area.
Season 2 will adapt the Whiskey Peak saga, featuring an epic battle where Zoro fights 100 opponents from Baroque Works. This arc has the potential to be a standout moment for action in the series. If the sword fights are anywhere near as impressive as those in Last Samurai Standing, the new season could address a major criticism of Season 1. Early reports suggest Netflix is planning to significantly improve the action sequences, and the recent success of the show indicates this is likely to happen.
