The latest trailer for *Monster: The Ed Gein Story* suggests this season of the Netflix anthology series will be its most disturbing yet, which is saying something considering how dark the show already is. After the popularity of *Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story* and *Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story*, creators Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan are now focusing on the infamous serial killer and grave robber Ed Gein. While the series has always shown the horrific crimes of its subjects, season 3 promises to be even more intense.
A new trailer released on September 15th (on YouTube) showcases Charlie Hunnam’s portrayal of Ed Gein in the upcoming season of *Monster*. Gein, a real-life killer, served as the inspiration for iconic horror movie villains in films like *Psycho*, *The Texas Chainsaw Massacre*, and *The Silence of the Lambs*. The trailer hints at a dark and disturbing depiction of Gein in *Monster* season 3, which is set to premiere on Netflix on October 3, 2025 – making it a chilling choice for Halloween-season viewing.
Why Monster: The Ed Gein Story Will Be the Darkest Season Yet
Even the previews for *Monster: The Ed Gein Story* are unsettling, and they only hint at how truly disturbing Ed Gein was. He became known as “The Butcher of Plainfield” because of his horrific crimes: he confessed to murdering two women in the 1950s, and also dug up bodies from nearby cemeteries to create objects from their skin and bones. Though found legally insane and committed to mental institutions until his death in 1984, the details of his crimes remain infamous and deeply disturbing.
Charlie Hunnam is preparing for a challenging role as Ed Gein, known for his disturbing crimes. This follows his popular portrayal of Jax Teller in *Sons of Anarchy*, a character who also faced controversy. However, Gein is likely to be an even more demanding role for Hunnam. Actor Evan Peters previously described feeling deeply unsettled after playing serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, and Hunnam may experience a similar emotional impact while portraying Gein.
Netflix’s *Monster* anthology series has become a huge hit, and has already been picked up for a fourth season. The next season will focus on Lizzie Borden, played by Ella Beatty (known for *If I Had Legs I’d Kick You* and *Feud: Capote vs. The Swans*), who was famously tried – and found not guilty – in the 1892 axe murders of her parents. Before the fourth season arrives, *Monster: The Ed Gein Story* promises to be a chilling and unforgettable addition to Netflix, bringing the story of one of history’s most terrifying criminals to life.
