Netflix’s New Movie With a Bizarre Harry Potter Connection Is Officially a Success With Millions of Views

The world of Harry Potter remains incredibly popular today. While the original book series is consistently best-selling, it’s just one part of the franchise’s success. The eight Harry Potter films were also huge, and launched the careers of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint – a rare feat for child actors. Now, with a new reboot planned for HBO Max, many fans worry Warner Bros. is risking what made Harry Potter so special in the first place.

It’s easy to assume the latest ventures into the Wizarding World are simply attempts to profit from a popular franchise that’s been quiet for a while. However, there’s a possibility this new content will offer something fresh. Plus, fans clearly haven’t lost their appetite for all things Harry Potter – they’re consuming it as quickly as it’s released. Interestingly, one of Netflix’s current hits even has an unexpected link to the magical series.

Currently a popular movie on Netflix, A Merry Little Ex-Mas is a heartwarming story about Kate (Alicia Silverstone) attempting to create one last memorable Christmas with her family before her divorce is finalized. Things get complicated when her ex-husband (Everett Holden) unexpectedly arrives with his new girlfriend (Jameela Jamil), leading to the usual romantic comedy chaos.

Throughout the movie A Merry Little Ex-Mas, a central idea is accepting family, even when it looks different than expected. Kate needs to open up to her ex-boyfriend’s new partner, despite not particularly liking her. However, that turns out to be the easy part, because there’s another character who really gets under Kate’s – and everyone else’s – skin.

A Merry Little Ex-Mas Gives Harry Potter Fans a Bad Name

Kate is surprised to meet her children’s significant others, and quickly learns about the quirks of her daughter Emily’s boyfriend, Nigel. A huge Harry Potter fan, Nigel dresses and acts like the wizard, constantly quoting spells and referencing the books in everyday conversation.

Despite the temptation to simply abandon Nigel – like leaving him stranded on an island, as the film playfully suggests – the movie surprisingly has him redeem himself for his past mistakes involving Harry Potter by learning to work with others. This is a positive change, because it emphasizes that anyone can be a hero, even someone whose initial attempt at a costume falls flat quickly.

A Merry Little Ex-Mas is streaming on Netflix.
