A brand new mystery series is quickly becoming a hit on Netflix. Created by a renowned crime author, the show premiered just last week and has already climbed to the #2 spot on the platform’s Top 10 list, attracting almost 10 million viewers. Its popularity continues to grow.
Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials takes place in England in 1925. The story begins with what seems like a prank at a fancy house party, but quickly turns deadly. Lady Eileen ‘Bundle’ Brent, an unexpected detective, must solve a complex mystery that will forever alter her life. The series features performances by Mia McKenna-Bruce, Helena Bonham Carter, and Martin Freeman.
Does It Live Up to the Hype?
It doesn’t look promising. The new mystery series is receiving only average reviews from both critics and viewers, currently holding a 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Marty Brown from Common Sense Media gave it 4 out of 5 stars, praising the twists and turns that will appeal to both casual and dedicated mystery fans. However, Adam Sweeting of The Arts Desk had a different opinion, noting the show is enjoyable with beautiful scenery and a strong lead actress, but lacks genuine suspense or threat.
Viewers weren’t impressed with Seven Dials, giving it a low 49% rating on the Popcornmeter. Many found it slow and unengaging, with one person commenting that it felt like a movie stretched into three episodes. Another viewer described it as incredibly dull and frustrating, criticizing the pacing and format. They felt the story lacked the suspense expected from an Agatha Christie adaptation and that the long format drained any potential excitement. While the cast, including Helena Bonham Carter, was capable, their performances felt flat. The series also lacked visual appeal and atmosphere. Ultimately, viewers didn’t find it terrible, but simply boring and unrecommendable.
