The way people watch movies has changed a lot recently. With streaming services becoming so popular and movies becoming available to stream much sooner after their release, many viewers are choosing to wait and watch at home. Unless a film is based on a well-known story or gets amazing reviews, it can be difficult to get people to go to the theater, particularly for original movies. While studios always want box office success, streaming offers a second chance for films that don’t perform well in theaters, as they can still find an audience at home. A recent example of this is a summer movie that initially didn’t do well in theaters, but is now gaining popularity through streaming.
Darren Aronofsky’s new crime film, Caught Stealing, featuring Austin Butler, is currently popular on Netflix. According to the streaming tracker FlixPatrol, the movie was fourth on Netflix’s top 10 list yesterday, December 1st. While it’s now eighth as of today, December 2nd, it’s still attracting a lot of viewers.
Caught Stealing Deserved a Better Box Office Fate

Despite getting good reviews (84% on Rotten Tomatoes, with praise for the acting and its nostalgic feel), the film Caught Stealing didn’t perform well at the box office when it opened over the slow Labor Day weekend. It debuted in third place, behind a re-release of the classic film Jaws. The movie has a distinct 1990s style, and many believe it would have been a bigger success if it had been released back then.
If you enjoy crime movies, Caught Stealing is a film you shouldn’t miss. It’s similar in feel to the classic movie After Hours, telling the story of a man down on his luck who quickly finds himself in a complicated and escalating situation. Actor Butler shines as Hank Thompson, a former baseball player who accidentally gets mixed up with criminals in New York City. The role allows him to demonstrate his acting skills, seamlessly moving between dramatic and funny scenes, and proving he’s a captivating lead.
At just under two hours long, Caught Stealing gets right to the point after a quick introduction to the story and characters. The plot has several surprising turns that will keep you guessing. Because things are so unpredictable, you experience the movie alongside the main character, Hank, feeling just as unsure of what will happen next. The strong supporting cast – including Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith (who’s particularly fun as a British punk), Vincent D’Onofrio, and Regina King – adds even more to the film.
While not a traditional Christmas film, Caught Stealing is a fun option for Netflix viewers looking for something a little different this holiday season—but it won’t be available forever. Though it likely won’t win any awards like some of the director’s past work, Caught Stealing is an enjoyable and surprisingly different movie. It’s too bad it didn’t perform well in theaters, but it’s finding a new audience through streaming.
