Netflix’s Newly Added 6-Season Sitcom is A Streaming Hit 10 Years After It Was Cancelled

Sitcom lovers, rejoice! A popular show that ran for six seasons is now available on Netflix, over ten years after it originally ended. The series first premiered in 2010 and ran until 2016, when it was cancelled. The cast was reportedly upset by the decision, and many expressed their disappointment on social media even before CBS officially announced the cancellation.

Created by sitcom veteran Chuck Lorre, Mike & Molly featured Melissa McCarthy (known for Bridesmaids and Identity Thief) and Billy Gardell (Young Sheldon, You, Me, and Dupree) as a couple. The show followed Mike, a police officer, and Molly, a teacher, who met at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting. They fell in love while supporting each other through their struggles with food, and Molly eventually left teaching to become a writer.

Mike and Molly Was Classic Sitcom Fare

It’s not surprising the show heavily focused on the weight of its two main characters – one critic even counted 48 jokes about it in a single episode, making up over 35% of all the jokes. This likely contributed to the show’s lukewarm reception from critics, who generally gave it average reviews. However, some, like Diane Wertz from Newsday, praised the natural chemistry between the actors Melissa McCarthy and Billy Gardell, suggesting it almost saved the series from failing completely. They felt the pair were among the most relatable and charming sitcom characters in a long time.

While ‘Mike & Molly’ was notable for featuring leads who weren’t typical sitcom stars, it didn’t really revolutionize the genre. Despite being a bold move at the time, the show ultimately relied too much on its characters’ struggles and used their weight as the basis for many jokes, which alienated some viewers. One viewer called it a predictable and unoriginal show filled with fat jokes and unhappy families. However, others found the show relatable and enjoyed the connection they felt with Mike and Molly themselves, which kept them watching.
