Netflix’s One Piece Just Revealed a Future Straw Hat (& You Missed It)

Be warned – major spoilers for Season 2 of the Netflix series One Piece (and potentially future seasons) are ahead! Season 2 of the live-action One Piece has arrived, sending Luffy and the Straw Hat crew on a new journey through the Grand Line. This new area features several unique islands and introduces a lot of new characters, both friends and enemies. While many of these new faces have captured attention, one character may have been overlooked by some viewers.

The series introduces new allies for Luffy and his crew, like Princess Vivi, and even adds new members like Tony Tony Chopper. Interestingly, one future Straw Hat was actually hinted at much earlier in Eiichiro Oda’s original manga than when they officially joined the crew. However, explaining this involves major spoilers for the future of One Piece, which might be relevant to the live-action show. Continue reading for the details, but be warned – it’s a significant reveal!

Netflix’s One Piece Reveals First Look at Brook in Season 2

The second episode of One Piece: Into the Grand Line introduces Luffy and his friends to Laboon, a whale who repeatedly crashes into Reverse Mountain. They discover from Crocus that Laboon is trying to reach the Grand Line, remembering a pirate crew he befriended long ago. This crew couldn’t take Laboon with them when they sailed into the dangerous waters, and sadly, they never came back.

We first saw Brook – portrayed by Martial T. Batchamen in the live-action series – through a memory of Laboon’s past. He played a song called “Binks’ Brew” on his violin, and years later, Luffy was able to share that emotional connection with both Laboon and the song itself. This is a significant reveal because Brook eventually joins the Straw Hat crew as their musician in the One Piece anime and manga, though his appearance will be different from what we see here.

Who Is Brook in One Piece?

The recent flashback showing Laboon’s history connects seamlessly with what’s happening in the live-action One Piece series, though this backstory was originally shared much earlier. It was revealed as part of introducing the character Brook during the Thriller Bark arc. We learned about Brook and the ship his crew sailed, but they didn’t last long after entering the Grand Line. Brook himself died, but thanks to the power of the Revive-Revive Fruit, his soul remained and eventually inhabited his skeletal form – though it took a long time for his soul to find its way back.

Brook becomes a member of the Straw Hat crew soon after we meet him, and he’s always looking forward to being reunited with his friend Laboon once their adventure to find the One Piece is over. It’s uncertain if the Netflix series will reach that part of the story, so including this detail feels like a nice nod to Brook, in case he doesn’t get a major role later on.
