Netflix’s One Piece Showrunner Reveals The 1 Common Mistake The Show Avoids

After a hugely successful first season released in August 2023, the live-action adaptation of One Piece on Netflix is coming back for Season 2 on March 10th, 2026. The series, based on Eiichiro Oda’s popular Weekly Shonen Jump manga, tells the story of Monkey D. Luffy. While not a direct copy of the manga, the show stays true to Oda’s original ideas, which has made it a hit with both new and longtime fans. The first season quickly became a global phenomenon, and many consider it the best live-action adaptation ever made. Oda confirmed Season 2 just a month after the first season premiered, with the new season set to cover the Loguetown Arc, following the events of the Arlong Park Arc from Season 1.

The second season of the show will take Luffy and his crew to Loguetown and then begin their adventure in the dangerous Grand Line. A recently released trailer showed exciting highlights and introduced new characters that will appear before the Alabasta Saga begins. With the premiere date approaching, co-showrunner Joe Tracz has discussed a key error Netflix has been working to avoid in this adaptation.

One Piece Live-Action Showrunner Explains the Key Difference From Other Manga Adaptations

Joe Tracz became a co-showrunner for the second season of the live-action One Piece series, working with Matt Owens. He’s known for his work on popular shows like Dash & Lily and A Series of Unfortunate Events. In a recent interview with Empire magazine, Tracz explained that unlike many Western adaptations of manga, One Piece wasn’t altered to fit Western expectations – nothing was changed or censored.

Tracz points out that the show simply presents telepathic snails as the main way characters communicate, without ever offering an explanation for why they function this way. It’s accepted without question.

Unlike many live-action adaptations that disappoint fans of anime and manga, Netflix’s One Piece stays faithful to the original story and creator Eiichiro Oda’s vision of Luffy’s adventure. The show’s success comes down to its excellent casting choices, impressive visuals, and compelling storytelling, making it a standout adaptation even for popular series.

Eiichiro Oda has been involved with the live-action adaptation of One Piece from the start, carefully checking every aspect, from choosing the actors to how the story differs from the original manga. While the series does make significant changes to the plot, it still captures the heart and soul of the source material, which is a key factor in its success.

The show has been renewed for two more seasons, completing the Alabasta Saga – the second major story arc. However, with the original manga containing eleven story arcs, including the one currently being written, there’s still a significant portion of the story left to adapt.
