Netflix recently released a new horror series from the creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers. Called Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, all episodes are now available. While viewers are watching at their own speed, certain moments are already getting a lot of attention, including an unexpected cameo appearance.

Most of the show Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen features a small cast, but the fourth episode flashes back to a disturbing event in the past. This flashback reveals the source of the constant sadness and dread that haunts the main character, Rachel (Camila Morrone), showing that her struggles are rooted in family history.

Be warned, spoilers ahead! In the fourth episode, titled “The Witness,” Rachel is kidnapped by her father, Jay (Josh Hamilton), taking her from the unsettling family of her fiancé. Jay forces Rachel to watch a video of his wedding to her mother, Alexandra, who is portrayed by Victoria Pedretti. Pedretti is well-known for her roles in popular Netflix series like The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and the thriller You.

Similar to Rachel, Alexandra felt a growing sense of fear and foreboding as her wedding day approached. Tragically, while celebrating as newlyweds in their hotel room, Jay watched as Alexandra suddenly began bleeding profusely from her face and collapsed. Because Alexandra was heavily pregnant, Jay was forced to deliver Rachel himself – a deeply traumatic beginning to Rachel’s life.

As a big fan of the show, I noticed something really cool! In the first episode, when Rachel and her fiancé Nicky are driving, they’re listening to a true crime podcast. Guess who the narrator is? Victoria Pedretti! It turns out showrunner Haley Z Boston hid tons of little horror references throughout the series, and that podcast was one of them. It’s those kinds of details that really make the show stand out, you know?

Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen Showrunner Explains Victoria Pedretti’s Casting

In an interview with Radio Times, creator Mike Flanagan explained his choice of Victoria Pedretti for the role, saying he and many horror fans are big admirers of her work. He praised her ability to convincingly portray fear and express inner turmoil outwardly, and admitted he was thrilled she accepted the part, as she brought a lot to the character.

Initially, the scene showing Jay and Alexandra’s past was planned to be brief. But because Pedretti and Logan Miller (playing young Jay) delivered such strong performances, the episode was reworked to include more of their story.

Victoria and Logan delivered such strong performances that we were able to reshape the episode around their story. Originally, the script called for frequent cuts back to Rachel, but their scenes were so compelling that we decided to dedicate about 15 minutes to focusing solely on them.
