Despite receiving mixed reviews (a 58% score on Rotten Tomatoes), the sci-fi survival film The Great Flood has become one of Netflix’s five most-watched movies.
The South Korean science fiction disaster film debuted at the Busan International Film Festival in September 2025 and became available on Netflix worldwide the following December. Although reviews were mixed, the movie is proving popular with viewers on the streaming platform.
After being released three months ago, The Great Flood has become one of the most popular non-English movies on Netflix, reaching number five on the Global Top 10 list. It’s been viewed 85.7 million times, for a total of 155.7 million hours watched. It currently ranks behind Troll (103 million views), Under Paris (102.3 million views), Society of the Snow (98.5 million views), and Exterritorial (91.7 million views).
Okay, so rounding out the bottom of the top 10 is Nowhere with 85.7 million views, followed by The Platform at 82.8 million. Then there’s Counterattack with 66.9 million, Ad Vitam at 63.1 million, and Brick taking tenth place with 61.8 million views. Just a heads up, these numbers are based on views within the first 91 days of release, so The Great Flood won’t be able to move up any further after March 20th.
Directed by Kim Byung-woo (known for The Terror Live), and co-written with Han Ji-su, The Great Flood tells the story of an AI researcher (Kim Da-mi) and her robotic son (Kwon Eun-seong). They’re left stranded after a massive flood, and must take a dangerous risk – potentially deciding the future of humankind – as they try to escape.
The show will star Kim Da-mi and Kwon Eun-seong, along with Emmy-nominated actor Park Hae-soo, known for his role in Squid Game. Rounding out the cast are Kang Bin, Jeon Yu-na (from Pachinko), Seo Eun-soo, Jeon Hye-jin, Park Byung-eun, and Lee Hak-joo.
Although The Great Flood became one of Netflix’s biggest hits, viewers and critics have had a varied response to it. Critics gave it a 58% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences rated it even lower, at 34%.
With just 10 days left in its initial release period, The Great Flood is on track to potentially move ahead of Exterritorial and claim the fourth spot next week. However, breaking into Netflix’s top three non-English films – currently held by Society of the Snow, Under Paris, and Troll – is looking less likely.
