Netflix’s Scooby-Doo Reboot Reveals Surprising Change to Scooby

Netflix has given fans a first glimpse of Scooby-Doo in its upcoming reboot, Scooby-Doo: Origins. Like the rest of the gang, this version of Scooby is younger than we’ve seen before – he’s a puppy! Netflix shared the first look in a video on social media.

What’s most unexpected about the new Scooby-Doo is that it’s a real puppy, unlike previous live-action movies which used computer-generated imagery. This could significantly change the show, as a real animal won’t be as exaggerated or cartoon-like as a digital one. It also makes you wonder: will this Scooby talk, or will he just act like the silent puppy from the ‘Surfboard Dracula’ movie?

Netflix Reveals Its Scooby-Doo

I absolutely loved Scooby-Doo: Origins! It’s such a clever story about how Shaggy and Daphne, reconnecting during their last summer at camp, stumble into a really spooky mystery. It all starts with this poor, lost Great Dane puppy who seems to have seen something terrible – a possible murder, even! They team up with Velma, who’s super logical and down-to-earth, and Fred, the new guy who’s a bit of a mystery himself, and together they try to solve this case. But as they dig deeper, it feels like this creepy nightmare is pulling up secrets from all of their pasts – it’s so thrilling!

The new Scooby-Doo movie features Mckenna Grace as Daphne, Tanner Hagen as Shaggy, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma, and Maxwell Jenkins as Fred. Paul Walter Hauser will also be in the film, titled Scooby-Doo: Origins.

Netflix Scooby-Doo: Origins Is Already Underway

Filming for Scooby-Doo: Origins began in Atlanta in April. The series is led by showrunners Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg from Midnight Radio, with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman of Berlanti Productions also serving as executive producers. André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, and Adrienne Erickson from Midnight Radio are also executive producers. Toby Haynes will direct the first episode and is also an executive producer on the show.

Greg Berlanti shared that one of his earliest and most cherished Hollywood experiences was watching Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera sign animated cels. He praised Josh and Scott, along with the entire Midnight Radio team, for creating a story that beautifully reflects the personalities and incredible work of Hanna and Barbera.

Scooby-Doo’s Live-Action Legacy Continues

Although a real dog is playing Scooby-Doo for the first time, this isn’t the first live-action retelling of the gang’s origin story. The TV movie Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins covered similar ground in 2009, and a sequel, Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster, came out in 2010.

Raja Gosnell directed the film, with a script by James Gunn. The movie featured Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr., Matthew Lillard, and Linda Cardellini, and Neil Fanning provided the voice for Scooby-Doo. It was a box office success, earning $250 million and leading to a 2024 sequel, Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed, which made $180 million.
