Netflix’s Scrapped Power Rangers Series Would Have Brought Back Fan-Favorite (& Dragons)

Power Rangers is making a comeback to television and film! Disney+ is currently casting for a new series, and Paramount is working on a movie reboot, as well as a project based on the Power Rangers comics. Fans have a lot to look forward to! A previous live-action series was cancelled a few years ago, but new details have emerged about how ambitious it was – it planned to feature popular Rangers and their Zords (dragons).

According to Power Rangers insider Jinsakuu on X (formerly Twitter), the cancelled Netflix Power Rangers project, led by Jonathan Entwistle, was planned to be a darker, more mature take on the franchise. It would have drawn heavily from the Shattered Grid storyline and featured major events like a Ranger’s on-screen death and a full-scale war between Rangers. The series also included plans for epic dragons and the return of Tommy Oliver, who would have led a brand new team of Rangers.

Jonathan Entwisle proposed a very ambitious idea for a Power Rangers show with Netflix. He envisioned something much more mature and realistic – darker, grittier, and willing to kill off Rangers permanently. The concept included large-scale conflicts, like Ranger wars with dragons, which was a pretty radical departure from the usual format.

Jinsakuu described Jonathan Entwistle’s vision for a new Power Rangers show as incredibly ambitious and daring. He wanted a darker, more mature series for Netflix, featuring a multiverse storyline where Rangers could actually die and engage in large-scale wars – complete with dragons! He envisioned a gritty, medieval aesthetic similar to ‘Game of Thrones,’ combined with armored suits inspired by Toku Jay and the high-energy intensity of ‘Shattered Grid.’

The Scrapped Power Rangers Project Would Have Embraced Shattered Grid and A New Leader

Something particularly noteworthy is the second tweet mentioned, which announced Tommy Oliver would lead a new team of Power Rangers. This connects directly to the “Shattered Grid” storyline, as that event heavily focused on Tommy. After all, the shocking moment that kicked off “Shattered Grid” was the death of our universe’s Tommy at the hands of Drakkon.

The story is drawing a lot of inspiration from the Shattered Grid storyline, and it’s also taking a darker turn. I’m wondering if the dragons are being integrated into the Zords’ history in a meaningful way, or if they’re simply appearing as part of the opposing forces. With several dragon-themed Zords – like the Black Dragon Lord, Serpentera, and the Dragonzord – playing a role, a deeper connection to dragon lore seems likely.

The comic series Shattered Grid presents a different version of Tommy Oliver, where he doesn’t become a Power Ranger after escaping Rita Repulsa’s control. Instead, he teams up with her and conquers their world, which becomes known as the world of the Coinless because the Power Rangers there have lost their Power Coins. In this reality, Billy is dead, and the remaining Rangers are fighting a desperate battle against the evil Lord Drakkon. Only Kimberly still has powers, but she’s been magically controlled and transformed into the Ranger Slayer. Because the Coinless world deals with serious and mature themes, the story has a much darker feel.

The outline doesn’t clarify whether Lord Drakkon was intended to be the main villain, or simply a source of inspiration, similar to how Lord Draven appeared in Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel. That season introduced Draven, a villain who built robotic sentries and sought to capture Rangers from different universes. Though their names were alike, Draven and Drakkon didn’t share much of a connection. It would be interesting to know if this cancelled reboot was genuinely aiming to adapt the comic book version of Lord Drakkon for television.

Although it’s sad the original idea won’t happen, we’re getting a new series instead, and we hope it will find its own success.

The Power Rangers reboot currently has no release date.
