The story of Seong Gi-Hun wrapped up with the third and final season of Squid Game last year. Although the reality competition Squid Game: The Challenge was released on Netflix, and more projects based on the Squid Game world are planned, the show’s creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, is now working on something different. He isn’t planning another series of challenges related to Squid Game, but will continue to create content for Netflix. Recently, Dong-hyuk revealed his next project for the streaming service, and it’s a bit of a surprise for many Squid Game fans.
According to Variety, Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of Squid Game, is developing a new television series called The Dealer. The show centers on Geonhwa, a casino dealer whose wedding plans are derailed by a housing fraud scheme. She’s forced to navigate the dangerous world of underground gambling to rebuild her life. Like Squid Game, the series will follow a struggling character fighting to overcome serious financial hardship.
While a premiere date hasn’t been announced, the cast for the series is reportedly set. Variety reports that Jung So-min will play Geonhwa, Ryoo Seung-bum will be Hwang Chisu, Lee Soo-hyuk will play Jo Jun, and Ryu Kyung-soo will portray Choi Wooseung – the main character’s fiancé. What of Squid Game?

As of today, Netflix hasn’t confirmed whether Squid Game will get a second season or any spin-off shows. The final scene of season three suggested the games might expand to North America, potentially featuring Cate Blanchett as someone in charge of the tests. However, the original creator of the show might not be involved in any future installments.
I remember reading an interview with Hwang Dong-hyuk last year where he suggested we might see more stories from the world of Squid Game, but probably not as a direct season two. He mentioned he’d be more inclined to explore a spin-off if he came up with a compelling new character or story. Given how season three wrapped up – especially with everything the main character did to ensure a specific contestant won – a spin-off seems like the most logical next step. With how popular the show is on Netflix, I really wouldn’t be surprised if something new comes out soon.
