Netflix has a history with political thrillers, having found great success with shows like *House of Cards*. While they’ve attempted to replicate that success multiple times, they haven’t truly found another hit until recently.
As a total cinema and TV buff, I’ve been hooked on *The Diplomat* since it dropped on Netflix in 2023. It’s one of those shows that consistently delivers, with a new season arriving every year. It’s even gotten Emmy nominations, which is fantastic! And the recently released Season 3, which premiered on October 16th, is seriously good – it launched with a 95% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes and immediately shot to the top of Netflix’s most-watched list. I highly recommend it!
Based on 20 reviews, the show received mostly positive feedback, with only one negative review from Ben Travers of Indiewire. He felt the latest installment relied too much on subtlety and needed more clarity, comparing it to both a serious exploration of international relations and a typical high school drama focused on romantic relationships. Ultimately, he found the series to be pure escapism, even when it tries to be thought-provoking.
Hope Sloop of Decider praised *The Diplomat*, noting it continues to be a standout show despite its main character being constantly under pressure. She found it surprisingly enjoyable how the series makes international politics feel thrilling, authentic, and well-done.
In a review for the Wall Street Journal, John Anderson questioned whether the glamorous portrayal of life at the highest levels felt entirely realistic, or if the people depicted were equally authentic. However, he praised the show’s central relationship between Hal and Kate, finding it surprisingly believable and genuine – a key strength of *The Diplomat*.
According to TV Insider’s Matt Roush, the third season of *The Diplomat* is a wildly entertaining, fast-paced series perfect for binge-watching.
As Alison Herman observed, the third season of *The Diplomat* doesn’t just continue the existing plot—it significantly changes the established situation. Surprisingly, these changes actually bring the series back to what made it compelling in the first place.
Martin Carr also gave the new season a glowing review, calling it ‘exceptional.’ He noted that Netflix has discovered and showcased a fantastic cast who work together perfectly, describing the show as ‘self-confident and effortlessly original,’ and full of interesting plot twists and strong acting.
The Diplomat Becomes a Streaming Sensation
As a big fan of well-made shows, I wasn’t at all surprised to hear *The Diplomat* is doing so well on streaming. When it launched on October 18th, it actually landed at number five worldwide! It was just behind a few other popular titles at the time – *No One Saw Us Leave*, the newest *Monster* series focusing on Ed Gein, and a Turkish drama called *Old Money*.
In the US, *The Diplomat* started at number four, following *Monster: The Ed Gein Story*, *Boots*, and the dating show *Love Is Blind*. Viewers really liked it too, giving it a 91% rating on the Popcornmeter – the highest score any show has received so far.
The Diplomat is streaming on Netflix.
