Reminders of Him and undertone are thriving at the box office in spite of major competition.
Two new films, the romance Reminders of Him and the horror movie undertone, were both released on March 13th. Reminders of Him is already getting high praise as the best-rated Colleen Hoover book adaptation so far. However, they’re competing for viewers with Hoppers, which had a very strong opening weekend for an original Pixar film and is now in its second week, as well as with people choosing to stay home to watch the Oscars.
According to Deadline, Hoppers is expected to remain the top movie at the box office this weekend, earning around $30 million domestically. It’s performing remarkably well, with ticket sales dropping only 34% from last week. Meanwhile, Reminders of Him and Undertone have both exceeded expectations, earning more than the initially projected $8 million each during their opening weekends.
The new movie Reminders of Him is predicted to open at number two in the box office this weekend, earning between $19 and $20 million. Meanwhile, A24’s undertone is expected to come in at number three with around $10 million.
As a movie fan, it’s been a really exciting couple of weeks at the box office! For the second weekend in a row, we’ve had two brand new movies break into the Top 3. Last weekend, Hoppers jumped right to number one and The Bride! landed at number three. It’s pretty rare to see that happen – the last time two movies opened in the Top 3 was over a month ago, on Valentine’s Day weekend, when Wuthering Heights, GOAT, and Crime 101 took the top three spots.
The movie undertone has already made back its production costs and is proving to be a big success. Although it likely spent a good amount on advertising, it hasn’t yet needed to earn enough to cover those costs through ticket sales. The film reportedly only cost $500,000 to make, and by the end of the weekend, it will have earned over 20 times that amount.
The movie Reminders of Him needs to attract a large audience to be profitable, as it cost $25 million to make. Typically, films need to earn two and a half times their production costs to break even, which means this movie might need to earn around $62.5 million.
Despite being a newer release, Reminders of Him is resonating with viewers and gaining popularity through positive word-of-mouth, building on a strong opening weekend. Audience scores reflect this, with an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter (compared to undertone‘s 54%) and a CinemaScore of B (versus undertone‘s C).
