H.G. Wells’s War of the Worlds is a hugely important and influential early science fiction novel. It follows an unnamed narrator as Earth is invaded by incredibly advanced Martians, whose intelligence and technology far surpass our own. As a true classic of the genre, the novel has been adapted into countless movies, shows, and other formats. Steven Spielberg’s 2005 film, also titled War of the Worlds, is one of the most popular and well-regarded adaptations, successfully capturing the story’s terrifying scope and renewing interest in it. However, the film did leave out a particularly memorable scene from the book: the final, heroic stand of the HMS Thunder Child.
The HMS Thunder Child was a powerful, fictional ironclad ship famous for defending refugee vessels and destroying three Martian fighting machines. In a dramatic and selfless act, it rammed the last one, allowing civilians to escape, even as the ship went down. Despite being a memorable and inspiring moment, the Thunder Child is rarely featured in adaptations – famously overlooked by Steven Spielberg. Now, this celebrated warship is finally getting its due. Titan Comics is releasing a new comic book, War of the Worlds: Thunder Child, which tells the story of the ship’s crew, from the beginning of the Martian invasion to their courageous and heartbreaking final stand.
A New Perspective on a Classic, Ignored Story

A new graphic novel inspired by the HMS Thunder Child will unfold alongside the story of the original book. It will center on the ship’s crew and their efforts to keep things running amidst a crumbling society, showing they often face conflict with each other as well as with the Martians. The adaptation is being created by a talented team: writers Matt Hardy (known for Cadavers and Last Exit to Brighton) and Rob Jones (Hell in Stalingrad), and artist Kevin Castaniero (The Reason for Dragons, Cocaine Disco).
Rob Jones explained that their goal was to create a version of the story that would appeal to both new readers and long-time fans of H.G. Wells’ work, including those familiar with the book, the musical, or other adaptations.
The Thunder Child, a ship that represents a crucial turning point and the strength of humanity against the overwhelming Martian invasion, is often ignored in adaptations of The War of the Worlds. This new graphic novel from Titan Comics finally gives the ship and its crew the attention they deserve, something even popular versions of the story haven’t done. It’s essential reading for fans of H.G. Wells and a captivating pick for any comic book enthusiast.
