New Assassin’s Creed Franchise Update Should Concern Fans

Longtime fans of the Assassin’s Creed series should pay attention to a recent change at Ubisoft. While Assassin’s Creed has been Ubisoft’s most successful franchise for almost 20 years, newer games have received mixed reactions, with many players hoping for a return to the series’ original style. A recent shift in development makes it unclear whether that will happen.

Luc Couture, a veteran designer at Ubisoft who helped create the original Assassin’s Creed game, announced this week that he’s leaving the company. Couture worked on the Assassin’s Creed series for many years, contributing to titles like Assassin’s Creed 2, Assassin’s Creed 3, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, Assassin’s Creed: Unity, and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. He also lent his talents to other popular franchises including Prince of Persia, Far Cry, and Watch Dogs.

In a recent social media post, Maxime Couture announced his departure from Ubisoft Montreal after more than 20 years. He described his time there as an amazing experience where he grew professionally and personally. Couture is now looking forward to a new chapter, joining a smaller game studio to pursue fresh challenges and work alongside experienced colleagues. He expressed excitement about this change and the future.

How Will This Impact Assassin’s Creed?

Although it’s understandable that Couture wants to pursue new opportunities outside of Ubisoft, it’s worrying to see a long-time member of the Assassin’s Creed team leave. Several key developers who built the series have already left the company, meaning fewer original creators remain. This doesn’t automatically mean the future of Assassin’s Creed will be poor, but it likely signals a continued shift away from what made the earlier games so special, and towards new ideas.

The future of the Assassin’s Creed franchise looks promising. A remake of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag is reportedly being developed and could be released before the end of 2026. In addition, a brand new Assassin’s Creed game, currently known as Codename Hexe, is also in the works, though a release date hasn’t been announced yet. We expect to hear more details about Hexe in the coming months.
