New Assassin’s Creed Game Reportedly Cancelled Due to Tense “Political Climate”

According to reports, a new Assassin’s Creed game was cancelled last year because of a sensitive political situation in the United States. The Assassin’s Creed series often incorporates political and religious themes, having explored various time periods, countries, and cultures. A key part of what makes the Ubisoft games so popular is the chance to experience historical events and meet famous people, often while playing a significant role in those events. Over the years, the series has included a diverse cast of characters, from pirates and popes to historical figures like George Washington, and even elements of science fiction.

This year, fans received *Assassin’s Creed Shadows*, the latest installment set in feudal Japan. Ubisoft is planning several large-scale *Assassin’s Creed* games, including a future title focused on witches, which is currently expected to be the next main game. A remake of *Assassin’s Creed 4* is also strongly rumored to be in development. However, a recent report reveals that another *Assassin’s Creed* game was cancelled before it was ever announced.

Civil War-era Assassin’s Creed Game Reportedly Cancelled

A new Assassin’s Creed game set during and after the American Civil War, focusing on the Reconstruction era of the late 1800s, was reportedly cancelled last summer, according to Stephen Totilo of Game File. The game would have featured a Black protagonist who, after being enslaved in the South, sought a fresh start in the West. He would eventually be recruited by the Assassins to return and battle groups like the Ku Klux Klan.

The upcoming Assassin’s Creed game aimed to explore how societal control could be achieved through racial divisions, drawing inspiration from contemporary political issues in the United States. Though still in early development and years from release, the project was cancelled following the negative reaction to the character Yasuke in *Assassin’s Creed Shadows*.

However, the main reason Ubisoft didn’t move forward with the game was the perceived political climate. The company was already facing financial difficulties and worried that any controversial choices could alienate players and harm the franchise.

Interestingly, this wouldn’t have been the first *Assassin’s Creed* game to feature a slave as a central character. The *Freedom Cry* expansion for *Assassin’s Creed 4* already allowed players to control Adéwalé, a former slave, and focused on his efforts to liberate others and dismantle the slave trade in the 1700s. While *Assassin’s Creed 3* explored the American Revolutionary War, it didn’t deal with such sensitive political issues. According to sources, this cancelled *Assassin’s Creed* project is unlikely to ever be revisited.
