Reports indicate that a new Batman game in the Arkham series has been cancelled. WB Games hasn’t released a major Batman title in almost ten years. Since the 2015 launch of Batman: Arkham Knight, only Batman: Arkham VR and Batman: Arkham Shadow have been released with the core series name. Batman: Arkham Shadow, released in 2024 for Meta Quest 3 VR, received positive reviews from both players and critics. Unfortunately, it appears a continuation of the main series will no longer happen.
Reports from Aftermath indicated that Meta was developing a sequel to Batman: Arkham Shadow. While Camouflaj created the original game, Sanzaru Games was reportedly leading the development of the sequel. However, Meta recently closed Sanzaru Games during large-scale layoffs, and all of the studio’s projects—including the new Batman game—have been cancelled.

The report confirms that Meta won’t be closing Camouflaj, leading to speculation that their Batman project might move to the Arkham Shadow studio. However, recent Meta layoffs have significantly reduced Camouflaj’s team. The remaining employees are now working on user experience design for future Meta hardware, suggesting Meta is moving away from developing games specifically for the Meta Quest headsets.
It’s really unfortunate to see the layoffs affecting studios like Camouflaj and Sanzaru, and everyone else at Meta. However, the Batman Arkham series isn’t necessarily over. Reports suggest that Rocksteady Games, the creators of the original Arkham trilogy, is currently developing a new Batman game. Their recent release, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, didn’t perform well, so Rocksteady is focusing on returning to the Batman universe, though it will likely be several years before the new game is released.
