New Borderlands 4 patch notes bring PC performance fixes and optimization, and the start of weekly endgame updates — but console players are still waiting

Borderlands 4 from Gearbox Software launched on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PS5 just over a week ago, and the initial response has been mixed. Players and critics generally love the game’s story, gameplay, and overall look, but many are frustrated by significant performance problems on both computers and consoles.

Borderlands 4 launched with a ‘Mixed’ reception on Steam due to significant issues. While more players have been leaving positive reviews since launch, the overall rating hasn’t improved. Things were made worse by Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, who publicly argued with players reporting these problems on social media.

As a researcher following the launch of Borderlands 4 on September 12th, I observed that Gearbox quickly released a significant update, stating its purpose was to improve stability across different PC configurations. However, based on player reports, the update only offered limited improvement. Many users continued to experience frustrating issues like crashes and noticeable drops in framerate.

A new update released on Thursday fixes several crashes in the game, along with a few problems that were stopping players from progressing. It also corrects an issue where special weapons from a preorder bonus – the Gilded Glory Pack – were showing up in normal loot chests instead of where they should be.

This update focused on improving stability by fixing several crashes related to animations, sound, and how the game handles objects colliding. It also resolved issues causing crashes with graphics cards. Additionally, a bug preventing players from accessing the Reward Center after claiming the Gilded Glory Pack has been fixed, along with a few smaller improvements.

To keep players coming back, Borderlands 4 will feature rotating content each week. This includes new Big Encore Bosses, Weekly Wildcard Missions, and different locations for the Black Market Vending Machine, giving players fresh things to discover regularly.

The latest update for Borderlands 4 has introduced several new weekly updates for the endgame. One of these is a tougher version of a boss you’ve already fought, called the Weekly Big Encore Boss, and it drops even better loot.

Plus, there are Weekly Wildcard Missions. These quests add extra difficulty with unique challenges, and you can repeat them as many times as you want to try for the best possible version of the guaranteed Legendary gear they reward.

Maurice’s Black Market Vending Machine is a unique shop offering powerful gear for purchase, similar to Xur in Destiny 2. While everyone will find it in the same location each week, the items offered will be unique to each player. Gearbox encourages players to share what’s available in their machine and trade with others to get the gear they want.

While recent updates have boosted Borderlands 4’s performance on PCs, players are still experiencing a lot of problems beyond just crashes. More patches are needed to fix issues like slowdowns, stuttering, and visual glitches. Many players also dislike the game’s cluttered user interface, and hopefully, that will be improved soon as well.

Borderlands 4 still hasn’t received any updates for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, meaning the significant stability issues players experienced at launch last week are still happening.

The latest PC update included a fix for a bug that developers say will be available on Xbox and PlayStation 5 soon, suggesting a larger update for those consoles is likely. Players are also hoping the update will include a field of view (FOV) slider, as the current lack of one is a significant problem.

Despite some performance issues, Borderlands 4 has been generally well-received by both critics and players, earning an 83/100 score on Metacritic, which indicates a “Generally Favorable” reception. Our reviewer, Michael Hoglund, gave the game 4 out of 5 stars and called it the best Borderlands game to date.

I’m waiting to play until they fix some of the issues in the game. But if you’re eager to start now, Borderlands 4 is available on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and PS5 for $69.99. Good news for PC players – you can currently get it for $60.69 at Loaded (previously known as CDKeys).
