Fans of Harry Bosch will be getting more of the detective they love, but in a new way. A spinoff series called Bosch: Start of Watch is coming soon, focusing on Bosch’s early career. While Cameron Monaghan will be taking on the role previously played by Titus Welliver, viewers will need a subscription to a different streaming service to watch this new show.
I just read that the new Bosch show, *Start of Watch*, is going to be a prequel set way back in 1991! It’s going to show a young Harry Bosch as a rookie cop with the LAPD. But here’s the catch – it won’t be on Prime Video like the other Bosch and Ballard shows. If I want to watch it, I’ll need to subscribe to MGM+, which will add another $6.99 to my monthly bill. It’s a little frustrating, but I’m still excited to see how they tell Bosch’s origin story!
Cameron Monaghan, well-known for playing Ian Gallagher in *Shameless*, will also star in *Bosch: Start of Watch*. He’ll be joined by Omari Hardwick, famous for his role in *Power*, who plays experienced officer Eli Bridges. The new prequel series is scheduled to begin filming next year, and details about the story are below.
The new series, Bosch: Start of Watch, is set in a Los Angeles grappling with racial tensions, gang violence, and internal conflict within the police department. While handling everyday cases, Bosch becomes involved in a major robbery and uncovers widespread corruption, forcing him to question his principles and determine his path forward as a detective who believes everyone deserves equal consideration.
‘Bosch: Start of Watch’ Will “Honor the Franchise’s Legacy”
Prime Video
While an extra $6.99 a month might not seem like much, it’s disappointing for fans who previously watched the show with their regular Amazon Prime Video subscription. Even the previous series, *Bosch: Legacy*, was free to watch on Amazon’s now-closed Freevee service. This change to MGM+ will likely show how dedicated fans are – whether they’re willing to pay extra to continue following Harry Bosch’s story, even when he was a young officer.
According to Michael Wright, head of MGM+, the upcoming prequel will honor the original *Bosch* series while still delivering the realistic, case-based storytelling fans expect. He stated, “We’re excited to build on the *Bosch* world with this story of how the detective became the character viewers love.”
Cameron Monaghan and Omari Hardwick powerfully portray the characters, and with the guidance of Michael Connelly and our skilled producers, *Bosch: Start of Watch* aims to continue the series’ tradition of realistic, compelling stories while also launching a fresh direction.
We don’t have a release date for *Bosch: Start of Watch* on MGM+ yet. Since filming doesn’t begin until next year, it’s likely to premiere in late 2026 or early 2027. While we wait, you can watch all seven seasons of the original *Bosch* series on Prime Video.
