New Collection of SNES Games Announced for Switch and PS5

A collection of classic Super Nintendo (SNES) games is coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 on July 30th. While a dedicated version hasn’t been announced for the new Nintendo Switch 2, the console’s backward compatibility means owners will still be able to play it. Currently, the game is only confirmed for release in Japan. Players outside of Japan will either need to import the game using a Japanese Nintendo account or hope for a Western release date to be announced.

On July 30th, Edia will release Aretha Collection 1993-1995 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. This collection includes three classic NES games: Aretha the Super Famicom (1993), Aretha II: Ariel no Fushigi-na Tabi (1994), and Rejoice: Aretha Oukoku no Kanata (1995).

Port, Enhanced Port, Remaster or Remake?

It’s unclear exactly what this collection offers. Usually, when details are missing, it means it’s a simple re-release. It’s definitely not a remastered or remade version – those would be clearly advertised. We’re left wondering if it’s just a direct port of the original three NES games, or if it includes extra features and improvements. While either is possible, the lack of information suggests it’s likely just a basic port.

Since this game series originated in Japan and wasn’t released internationally, this new collection will likely only be available there, which is also why there’s no PC version. Western fans will probably need to import it, but thankfully, digital stores make that much simpler than before. However, unless you understand Japanese, you’ll find it difficult to play or even follow the story. Importing the standard collection will cost 8,580 yen, while the special edition is priced at 16,280 yen.
