Not everyone is seeing eye to eye on a new cosmetic trend.
A method called keratopigmentation, whereby color pigment is inserted into the cornea to mask the natural iris, as endorsed by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, has been garnering attention on social media due to its claim of instantaneously and permanently altering patients’ eye color.
As a seasoned lifestyle expert, I’ve had the privilege of sharing incredible transformative journeys through my lens as an ophthalmologist on TikTok. With over 3.4 million followers and countless views in the tens of millions, my videos showcase the remarkable before-and-after stories of my patients, such as a woman who was moved to tears upon successfully undergoing the procedure to change her eye color to a stunning olive green.
In the video, she expressed her delight, saying, “I adore it. The color looks incredibly authentic.” She also mentioned that she didn’t experience any discomfort post-surgery, and was left astonished, exclaiming, “It’s simply incredible!
The video ended with a disclaimer stating that the process, commonly referred to as ‘eye tattooing’, might lead to increased light sensitivity and discomfort, although some professionals assert that the potential risks could be significantly greater.
In January 2024, the American Academy of Ophthalmology released a statement advising against the procedure due to potential hazards such as vision loss, complications related to the cornea damage, bacterial/fungal infections, and dye leakage into the eye.
JoAnn A. Giaconi, MD, a representative from AAO’s clinical team, emphasized in a statement that “You shouldn’t consider these procedures risk-free.” She explained further that “Every surgical procedure involves some level of risk, and when it comes to surgeries focusing on cosmetic enhancements for the eye, the potential risks outweigh the benefits for maintaining good vision.
However, Wachler discarded the advisory as “imaginary facts regarding the risks associated with this process.” He further stated his intention to contest the Academy’s viewpoint on the matter.
He shared with NBC affiliate WXII in October that this would bring joy to [patients], as it’s something they’ve long desired. Now, with the advancement of technology, they are able to experience it.
