Despite facing setbacks with their previous live-service games like “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League”, it seems Warner Bros. is ready to give it another go. As reported by VGC, a job listing suggests that Warner Bros. Games is developing a new live service game, this time set within the DC Universe.
The advertised position calls for an executive producer who will spearhead the creation of a top-tier video game, using one of the renowned Intellectual Properties (IPs) from the extensive library of Warner Bros. or DC Comics as the foundation.
The job description continues by stating that the role involves supervising different aspects of game development, in addition to managing post-release live operations. This position is with WB Games Montreal and requires the employee to handle production budgets for the game, while also ensuring that quality assurance procedures, as well as ongoing live operations, are efficient and effective.
It’s quite unexpected to learn that Warner Bros. might revisit the live service model given their financial struggles, which they linked to the poor performance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League as recently as May. In their previous financial report, they mentioned that their revenue was boosted by the successes of Mortal Kombat 1 and Hogwarts Legacy, despite the commercial flop of Suicide Squad.
To put it simply, the gaming divisions of the company earned about $2.3 billion this year, which is 16% less than last year’s figure. However, overall, the company’s revenue grew by 9%, totaling approximately $9 billion for the same period.
The financial report was released following the announcement that three of the company’s studios – Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB Games San Diego – would be shutting down. The closure of Monolith Productions also resulted in the cancellation of a game based on Wonder Woman that had been in development at their studio.
In their announcement of studio closures, they acknowledged that the decision was challenging given Monolith’s rich history of crafting extraordinary gaming experiences for devoted fans. They expressed deep respect for the dedication of the three teams and gratitude towards each employee for their valuable input. Despite the hardships today brings, they are determined to return to creating top-tier games, ones that will captivate our loyal fanbase, and steer our game development business toward profitability and growth by 2025 and beyond.
It’s been suggested, though not officially confirmed by Warner Bros., that the cancellation of Wonder Woman may be linked to the poor performance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Additionally, prior to its cancellation, Wonder Woman was intended to incorporate the Nemesis system, which was developed for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and its sequel, Middle-earth: Shadow of War.
It’s been said that the disappointing performance of “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” and “MultiVersus” has left WB Games in a challenging financial situation.
