It’s hard to comprehend, but the Dynasty Warriors series from Koei Tecmo celebrates its 25th anniversary this year! Since its debut in 2000, the franchise has delighted gamers worldwide with releases on multiple platforms. Over the past two and a half decades, there have been 10 mainline games, with one of them reportedly receiving a remaster. However, Koei Tecmo hasn’t revealed which game is getting the upgrade just yet. We’re also unsure about the systems that will carry the remastered title when it eventually drops.
Koei Tecmo officially announced a remastered version of Dynasty Warriors in a video they released. This video, which celebrates the history of the series, is mostly a visual summary of the games that have been released so far. It lasts for about a minute and a half. For fans of Dynasty Warriors, this short video serves as a nostalgic trip down memory lane, and you can watch it below.
Without much surprise, enthusiasts of the Dynasty Warriors series are actively expressing their preferences regarding the upcoming remastered games and their desired choices. Many gamers have expressed a strong desire for the potential remaster of Dynasty Warriors 4, initially released in 2003 for PlayStation 2 and original Xbox. Given its enduring popularity among fans, it seems like an intelligent move to bring this installment back, offering newcomers the opportunity to explore its unique features. At present, the game is yet to appear on modern platforms, further increasing its appeal as a strong candidate for remastering.
In reality, the Dynasty Warriors series is older than 25 years if you count from its first release in North America in 1997. However, this game was titled differently in Japan and belonged to a different genre – it was a fighting game rather than the musou style that followed in subsequent numbered entries. Koei Tecmo considers Dynasty Warriors 2 as the true beginning of the series, so it’s unlikely they will remaster the first title.
It’s unclear when a remaster of Dynasty Warriors might be revealed or if we’ll learn anything substantial soon. But, enthusiasts of the musou genre could do well to watch Koei Tecmo’s Hyrule Warriors spin-off saga. This series carries over the gameplay style from Dynasty Warriors, but with characters and settings inspired by The Legend of Zelda. The upcoming title in this series, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, is being developed by Koei Tecmo and Omega Force, and it’s set to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 this coming winter.
