Fans of Friday the 13th were disappointed when their favorite game, “Friday the 13th: The Game,” was removed and closed down, leaving them with nothing to play. However, there’s now some optimism for another Jason Voorhees game as a new one is being developed, which was confirmed during San Diego Comic-Con. As of now, no partners have been revealed, so the type of game or the developer working on it remains unknown. The Jason Universe team did mention that this game (alongside a new movie) is high on their list of priorities.
Robbie Barsamian from Jason Universe recently discussed the current status of the Friday the 13th series in a panel at SDCC this week. Since the establishment of Jason Universe, followers of Friday the 13th have received content such as brief clips and action figures from the now-defunct Friday the 13th: The Game. However, the scarcity of concrete information about upcoming releases, whether movies or games, has left fans feeling restless. During the SDCC event, no further details were revealed about the game, but we now know for certain that one is in development.
During the SDCC panel, Barsamian shared that a new movie and game sequel are currently our top priorities. Most of our focus is being directed towards these projects, and he confidently stated that we’re now ready to deliver on this promise, although we’re not making an official announcement with our partners today. However, rest assured that both projects are under development.
On Friday the 13th: The Game, you’d find an engaging experience where one player took on the role of Jason Voorhees while the rest controlled camp counselors. The game had its rough moments, but the authentic portrayal of Jason was a major draw for players. Alongside Dead by Daylight, it played a significant part in igniting the trend of horror series being transformed into asymmetrical gaming experiences, leading to numerous other adaptations following suit.
Barsamian did mention that a “sequel” game was being developed, but this could simply refer to another installment in the Friday the 13th series rather than a direct continuation of Friday the 13th: The Game. In recent times, other horror franchises like Halloween and Evil Dead have seen revitalization through retro-styled games, while the Hellraiser franchise is taking an unconventional approach by creating standalone single-player games that offer fresh, terrifying experiences within their universe.
Although the new announcement of a Friday the 13th game brings excitement, it’s important to remember that details about the game are still scant since it was expected a game would eventually be developed following the creation of the Jason Universe. When further information will be revealed is uncertain (there are no more Friday the 13th dates in 2025), but hopefully we’ll learn more about the game this year.
