From 2011 to 2019, spanning a period of eight years, “Game of Thrones” reigned supreme on television screens and cleaned up at award ceremonies. With outstanding acting from its high-profile cast, gripping narratives, and intense battle scenes, HBO’s adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” book series solidified itself as one of the most accomplished TV shows in history. The finale in 2019 left an empty spot on television that no other show has been able to occupy since. Six years later, a new series that could potentially become the successor to “Game of Thrones” is set to debut.
In simpler terms, the TV show “King and Conqueror,” starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and based on William the Conqueror, has secured a distribution deal with Prime Video in the United States. According to Deadline, it will be available on HBO Max in various other countries following deals closed by Paramount Global for this upcoming historical drama. The series is slated to premiere in the UK later this month, but a U.S. release date has yet to be announced.
Lisa Kramer, President of International Content Licensing at PGCD, expressed excitement about the significant interest in ‘King & Conqueror’ from top platforms globally. She noted that its captivating narrative, talented cast, and daring creative approach make it a unique series that strikes a chord across various regions and cultures.
Just like the captivating and character-rich Game of Thrones, the series King and Conqueror promises an enthralling blend of family drama, grand battles, and a narrative that could shape history. This eight-part production unfolds during a pivotal historical juncture in 11th-century England, featuring Coster-Waldau, who played Jaime Lannister across all eight seasons of Game of Thrones, as William, Duke of Normandy and James Norton as Harold, Earl of Wessex. The studio describes it as “a tale of a conflict that determined the destiny of a nation – and a continent – for a millennium. The seeds of this confrontation can be traced back decades, with roots that extend through two connected family dynasties, vying for power across two lands and an angry sea. Harold of Wessex and William of Normandy were two men fated to clash at the Battle of Hastings in 1066; two allies initially uninterested in the British throne, who were eventually compelled by circumstances and personal ambition into a struggle for its possession.
The series additionally includes Emily Beecham portraying Edith Swan-neck, Clémence Poésy as Matilda, Jean-Marc Barr in the role of King Henry, Elliott Cowan as Sweyn, Bjarne Henriksen as Earl Siward, Oliver Masucci as Baldwin, Indy Lewis as Margaret, Jason Forbes as Thane Thomas, Ingvar Sigurdsson as Fitzosbern, Ines Asserson as Judith, Sveinn Ólafur Gunnarsson as Hardrada, and Léo Legrand as Odo.
The series titled “King and Conqueror” was penned by Michael Robert Johnson and brought to life. Baltasar Kormákur directed the initial episode and also serves as an executive producer. In the United Kingdom, it will debut on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Sunday, August 24th. A streaming platform for viewing in the U.S. will be announced at a later date on Prime Video.
