After weeks of leaks and speculation, PlayStation officially announced the next installment in the God of War franchise during last night’s State of Play presentation.
Following the critically acclaimed God of War Ragnarök four years ago, Sony Santa Monica is developing the next big installment in the God of War saga, titled God of War Laufey.
This installment marks a significant shift, as early reports suggested the game might focus on Kratos’ wife, Faye, instead of Kratos himself as the main character.
In a post to the PlayStation blog, here’s how developer Sony Santa Monica describes the game:
Everyone thought Faye’s death marked the end, but for this skilled warrior and Kratos’s wife, a new journey is only just starting. She wakes up in an unfamiliar world after her funeral, realizing the safeguards she carefully arranged to keep Kratos and Atreus safe are now in danger.
Okay, so I’m totally hooked on this story! It’s about Faye, and she has to literally battle her way through the afterlife – this place called the Everywhen – to protect her family and friends. Apparently, it’s ruled by super powerful, and seriously cutthroat, gods from all different mythologies, and the whole place is just bursting with wild, dangerous magic. It sounds intense!
A new gameplay trailer, lasting 20 minutes, revealed details about the game and introduced the character of Faye, portrayed by Deborah Ann Woll, known for her role in Daredevil.

She encounters Phranque, a living, jelly-like creature voiced by Jack Quaid (known from The Boys), and Rue, a talking sword brought to life by Perlina Lau, who has appeared in Friday Night Bites and Creamerie, within the Everywhen.
The game offers players “intimate, brutal combat,” with “exploration of a rich, beautiful world”.
To make Faye play differently than Kratos, the developers are carefully creating a distinct and new experience.
Gameplay revolves around quick and seamless fighting in the air and on the ground, with opportunities to chain attacks together and keep enemies airborne. It also leverages her unique role as the Golden Hand of the Jötnar.

Faye can attack enemies with a golden palm strike that separates their souls from their bodies. She can then attack these vulnerable souls directly, or even send them flying into other enemies.
We had enough time during the 20-minute presentation to cover a lot about the new game, but a release date wasn’t mentioned.
We’ll have to wait and see, but with games like GTA 6 still expected in late 2026, we believe a release before 2027 is unlikely.
God of War Laufey is currently in development for PlayStation 5.
