The announcement of remakes for God of War, God of War 2, and God of War 3 has me cautiously optimistic about where the series is headed. For over a year, many fans – myself included – have been hoping the original Greek God of War games would return on the PS5. To see that wish come true, and in the form of a full remake, is fantastic – it’s even better than I expected.
Even though I’m excited about this God of War trilogy remake, I’m starting to worry about what it means for the next main God of War game. It’s been over three years since God of War Ragnarok came out, and I thought we’d be hearing about the next installment soon. Now, I’m concerned that a sequel to Ragnarok might not happen, as Santa Monica Studio may be focusing on this remake for a long time.
A God of War Ragnarok Sequel Now Seems Less Likely

The ending of God of War Ragnarok strongly suggested that Santa Monica Studio wasn’t finished with the series. Kratos not only lived through the events of the game, but he also embraced a new role as the God of Hope, hinting at his involvement in rebuilding the Norse world. Although Kratos’ story could have ended there, the game’s conclusion clearly implies he will return in a future installment.
As a huge fan, I’m really excited about what’s next for Atreus! By the end of Ragnarok, he’d really come into his own, and it felt like he was ready to lead his own stories. I’m hoping we’ll either see him as the main character in future God of War games, or at least get a spin-off where he’s the star!
While it’s likely we’ll see more God of War games featuring Kratos and Atreus in the future, Santa Monica Studio has a lot on its plate right now. Remaking the original three God of War games is a massive undertaking that will take up a significant amount of the studio’s time for years to come. They could have simply updated the older games, but they chose to completely rebuild them, which is much more challenging. This means a sequel to God of War Ragnarok might not be released for a very long time.
Santa Monica Studio Is Already Focused on Other Projects

It’s looking less likely that a new main God of War game will be released anytime soon. Santa Monica Studio, the team behind God of War, has been working on a completely new game for a while now. Director Cory Barlog hinted at this new project back in 2021, and while it hasn’t been officially announced, most people expect it to come out within the next year or two – definitely before the end of the PlayStation 5’s lifespan.
We’ve learned that Santa Monica Studio is currently developing two big projects. One is a brand new game, which seems to be the studio’s primary focus right now. The other is a remake of a previous title, but it’s likely still in the early planning stages. Considering the studio’s size, it’s improbable they are also working on a sequel to Ragnarok at the same time.
Work on a new main God of War game likely won’t start until after Santa Monica Studio releases its current project. Even then, it’s not certain to be their next focus. If this new game becomes very popular, a sequel would probably be made. This could mean a sequel to Ragnarok wouldn’t be approved until after the studio finishes its remakes, which might not happen until the 2030s.
God of War Will Continue to Be a Priority for PlayStation No Matter What

While I’m a little concerned that remaking older God of War games might push back the next main story chapter for Kratos, it’s obvious that PlayStation considers this franchise a huge priority. God of War is their best-selling exclusive series besides Gran Turismo, and the recent success of God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök suggests they’ll want to release another new game relatively soon.
I’m hoping we see more games like God of War: Sons of Sparta pop up. It was a cool surprise – a 2D action game showing a younger Kratos in a totally different style than the main games. I don’t think we’ll get a ton of these spin-offs, but PlayStation seems to be figuring out how to keep us God of War fans happy while we wait for the next big release, and more games like Sons of Sparta could be a big part of that.
I’m really excited about what’s next for God of War, even though I was a little worried at first. It’s amazing to think we might get to play the original three games again with modern graphics and gameplay improvements – something I didn’t think would happen. However, I hope that making these remakes doesn’t significantly delay the development of a brand new God of War game.
