New Hammer Film Announces 60-Year Hiatus

After a 60-year hiatus, Hammer Studios, a renowned name in horror cinema, has returned with a fresh leadership and innovative production plans! Excitedly, fans of the genre can now look forward to a brand-new monster movie from this venerable film company.

In the realm of chilling cinematography, I can’t help but echo the sentiments expressed by Bloody Disgusting: it’s impossible to delve into horror film history without acknowledging Hammer Horror. For nearly a century, Hammer Films has been a cornerstone in shaping the horror genre on the silver screen, dating back to 1934. Among their countless masterpieces, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, graced by the iconic actors Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, remains one of their most revered works.

As per their Instagram post, the upcoming movie has been titled Ithaqua. The creators aim to deliver “true-to-form horror that will leave you absolutely petrified and indelibly marked.” Production on this film is currently underway with Casey Walker directing. The cast includes Luke Hemsworth, Kevin Durand, Michael Pitt, Craig Lauzon, and Leenah Robinson.

The plot was described as:

In the harsh wilderness of 1800s Canada, the fur trade is dwindling and a secluded settlement is on the brink of starvation. A hired gun struggles to rally the remnants of the population against the cold, hunger, and something much more sinister. A malevolent presence lurks, biding its time. Those who succumb to its power are afflicted with an unquenchable craving for human flesh.

The title and synopsis strongly suggest that this will be a Wendigo movie.

In Native American folklore, the Wendigo is a monstrous figure resembling a human, driven by an uncontrollable hunger for human meat. This terrifying entity has served as the main antagonist in numerous films and video games like “Antlers” (2021) and “Until Dawn”. H.P. Lovecraft also incorporated a version of the Wendigo into his mythos, naming it Ithaqua the Wind-Walker.

The movie might offer a unique interpretation of Lovecraft’s mythos. Alternatively, it may pay tribute to traditional horror while also introducing some groundbreaking elements in the thriller genre.

Two of the studio’s latest triumphs were “Let Me In” and “The Woman in Black,” both achieving worldwide acclaim as blockbusters. However, following these successes, the studio faced a financial downturn due to an industry-wide crisis within British cinema. Fast forward to August 2023, British theater producer John Gore seized control of Hammer Films, assuming the roles of chairman and CEO.

From when I was just a kid, I’ve been spellbound by the enchantment of Hammer Films,” he noted about his latest role. “Now, as I take charge of this legendary studio, my dedication has two aspects: to honor and safeguard the unique heritage of Hammer, and to initiate a fresh wave of narratives that enthralls audiences globally.

This development is encouraging for horror enthusiasts and cinema-goers at large. For some time now, it seems that Hollywood has been tainted by meaningless content and political agendas. So, the sight of a studio, particularly an established one, committing to honor its own past, is refreshingly invigorating.

The studio has additional projects planned following Ithaqua, with Hammer Films’ “Crypt-keeper” Steve Rogers hinting at them during a recent interview.

He mentioned without naming specific movies, he predicted that the upcoming year (2025) will bring an intriguing blend of British crime dramas, science fiction horrors, action-packed thrillers, adventure films, and Gothic tales. This diverse lineup will include both established classics and rare gems, with one standout title that significantly transformed its genre.

It’s not fully disclosed yet, but it’s evident that moviegoers will be treated to a series of thrilling Hammer movies coming out in the year 2025.
