A new game has become the highest-rated of 2025. It’s exclusive to Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, meaning you won’t find it on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, but it *is* available on PC. This new title has surpassed *Clair Obscur: Expedition 33* in ratings, pushing other highly anticipated games like *Hollow Knight: Silksong*, *Blue Prince*, *Split Fiction*, *Donkey Kong Bananza*, and *Death Stranding 2* slightly down the list – they’re all close to the top spot, but haven’t quite reached it.
Even though 2025 isn’t over yet, Supergiant Games has a lot to celebrate! Their game, *Hades II*, is currently the highest-rated new release of the year, scoring a remarkable 94 on Metacritic. We gave it a perfect 5/5 in our review, and it seems many others agree – no other 2025 release has reached that score. Interestingly, it’s even one point higher than the already highly praised original *Hades*.
About the Game:
Hades II, the follow-up to the popular 2020 game Hades, officially launched this week. It’s been available on PC through Steam Early Access since 2024, but this is the first time players can experience it on Nintendo Switch and the new Nintendo Switch 2.
You’ll play as Melinoe, the Princess of the Underworld and sister to Zagreus, the hero from the first game. She’s teaming up with the Olympian Gods to defeat Chronos, the powerful Titan of Time.
What’s Left in 2025 That Could Dethrone It?
While early reviews are excellent, *Hades II*’s score might decrease as more people play it, though increases are possible, but less likely – most games see their scores drop over time. If it doesn’t fall much, it has a strong chance of staying at the top. It’s hard to see any game released before the end of the year challenging it, except for *Metroid Prime 4: Beyond* in December. If *Metroid Prime 4: Beyond* lives up to the quality of past *Metroid Prime* games, it could take the lead right at the end of the year. Regardless, *Hades II* is almost certain to be a top contender for Game of the Year awards.
