New Horror JRPG Sequel Gets Overwhelmingly Positive Reviews From Original Game Fans

Launching a horror game on Thanksgiving might seem unusual, but that’s what developer Eeny, meeny, miny, moe did last week with Black Souls 2. While the game actually came out in Japan a few years ago, don’t be surprised to see it on Steam so soon after the first game. Now, a larger audience can experience a world with a dark twist on the classic story of Alice in Wonderland.

Despite being called Black Souls 2, this is actually the third game in the series. Red Hood’s Woods came before the original Black Souls. This sequel expands on the dark fantasy world of Black Souls with a lot more to explore. It features 11 different endings, but unlike the first game, you can’t get all of them in a single playthrough – you’ll need to play through the game multiple times to see everything.

Luckily, you’ll probably enjoy it! Black Souls 2 has a dedicated fanbase because it combines intense, mature themes with believable characters and a story that feels realistic and relatable. It’s definitely a game for adults, so be aware of that going in. However, if you know what to expect, you’ll find a game that players are really loving.

A big part of what makes the game compelling is its detailed story where your decisions really matter. In Black Souls 2, any character you meet can potentially die, leading to a wide variety of different endings. There are also 45 unique characters to interact with, a significant increase from the first game. Beyond the story, players enjoy the challenging combat, which the developers call “tactical and tense.” Some fans have compared the difficulty to Dark Souls, but that’s more about how unforgiving the battles are, rather than the specific way you fight.

The Steam version of the game has a lot of censorship compared to the original Japanese release. However, fans have created a patch that brings back most of the removed content, and even lets you choose which content to display. This allows players to customize the game to their preferences, which is especially helpful given the game’s mature themes.

So, this game is made in RPG Maker, which isn’t automatically a bad thing! Plenty of RPG Maker games have become really popular and gotten great reviews. But, games made with it do have a certain style, and it’s not always for everyone. Basically, don’t go in expecting graphics as amazing as something like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth or Black Souls 2. It’s good, but it’s a different aesthetic.

Even though it has flaws, Black Souls 2 is still a good RPG. If you enjoy games with mature themes, a complex story, and fun gameplay, it’s worth a look.
