New Indie Game Puts a Dark Roguelite Twist on PEAK (And It Looks Amazing)

Climbing games have become surprisingly popular recently. Last year saw the release of the adventure game Cairn, and the co-op game PEAK was a huge hit on Steam. Now, a new indie game is joining the scene, hoping to become the best climbing experience out there.

Okay, so I just heard about this new game called Ascenders: Beyond the Peak, and it seriously looks cool! I thought I’d seen everything when it came to climbing games, but this one’s different. It’s a roguelite, which means every run is different, but it’s turn-based, so you really have to think about your moves as you climb. It’s all about making tough choices to stay alive. It’s coming to Steam Early Access in 2026, and honestly, I’m already hyped – it feels like a fresh take on the whole climbing genre!

Ascenders: Beyond the Peak Brings Lovecraftian Horrors to The Climbing Game

I’ve been really impressed with everything Twin Sales Interactive has released! They brought us the wonderfully strange Bloomtown: A Different Story, and they even did digital versions of my favorite board games like Terraforming Mars and Carcassonne. And the team at Ludgogram? They’re no strangers to making awesome games! I loved Worlds of Aria – it really reminded me of D&D – and Tabletop Game Shop Simulator was just a perfect nerdy escape. Now, they’re tackling something completely new: a really interesting take on climbing games, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with!

Ascenders: Beyond the Peak is a unique game that combines exploration with turn-based strategy and resource management. You lead a climbing team up a treacherous mountain, facing not only the dangers of the climb itself, but also terrifying, Lovecraftian creatures. You’ll have to make difficult decisions that affect your entire team, and sometimes, you’ll need to make sacrifices to keep everyone going – even if it means lowering morale.

In Ascenders, players can choose from different climber classes to increase their chances of winning. Highlanders are strong and can push enemies off the cliff, and Scouts are quick and can help you change your strategy. Building a well-rounded team is just as important as making good decisions each turn. Completing expeditions will earn you artifacts to boost your team’s abilities and upgrade your base camp.

Ascenders features challenging, strategic levels played as a roguelite climb, but it also has a larger story. Your choices during gameplay will not only affect your immediate survival, but also how the story concludes. As the leader, you’ll build a reputation that influences how other groups perceive you and your team.

If you’re interested in Ascenders: Beyond the Peak, you can add it to your wishlist on Steam today! The game will be available in Early Access starting in the third quarter of 2026.
