I remember the 2010s being full of reboots and revivals, and the new Jumanji movies were definitely among the best! Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was a really fun update with an amazing cast – Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan were all perfect. Critics mostly loved it (it has a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes!), and it made almost a billion dollars worldwide! That’s why we got another one, Jumanji: The Next Level, which was just as good and a huge success too. It’s been six years since the last movie, but I’m so excited to hear they’re finally starting work on a new Jumanji film. Though, honestly, there’s also some news that’s a bit of a bummer for fans like me.
Dwayne Johnson posted on Instagram about a recent table read with the cast and crew as they start working on the next Jumanji movie. He announced this will be the last film featuring this group of people, calling it a “massive, fun, heartfelt adventure.” Johnson feels it’s a fitting way to conclude the beloved Jumanji franchise, ending on a positive note. You can see his complete post below.
Dwayne Johnson Is Returning to Jumanji at the Perfect Time
Although Sony likely wished the next Jumanji film had come together faster (the previous movie, The Next Level, earned over $800 million globally), the delay actually benefits Dwayne Johnson. He needs a box office success after some recent disappointments. Black Adam didn’t start a new franchise, and The Smashing Machine had the worst opening weekend of his career. While Johnson still wants to take on challenging acting roles (he’s working on a mob film with Martin Scorsese), returning to the popular Jumanji series now is a smart move. It’s a well-known and reliable franchise that should guarantee a big hit.
The long wait for Jumanji 4 could actually help it succeed at the box office. Because it’s been a while since the last film, audiences haven’t grown tired of the series and are likely eager for a new installment. When the marketing campaign begins, fans should be thrilled to see the cast back together, bringing their familiar chemistry and humor. Also, since Jumanji 4 is being promoted as the final movie, it could feel like an event people won’t want to miss, and a fitting tribute to the franchise’s history. Dwayne Johnson has shared that the film will include a nod to the original Jumanji – his character will wear a necklace featuring the dice, as a tribute to Robin Williams.
Sony has announced that Jumanji 4 will hit theaters on December 11, 2026. However, it remains to be seen if that date will stay firm. Dwayne Johnson confirmed the holiday release on Instagram, but December is already shaping up to be a busy month for movies. Currently, Jumanji 4 is scheduled to come out a week before two major blockbusters, Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three. Sony might decide to move the film to a less competitive date, but the previous Jumanji movies successfully shared the holiday season with Star Wars films, so there’s a good chance multiple big movies can thrive next Christmas.
Dwayne Johnson has stated this new movie will conclude the current Jumanji series, but if it performs well, Sony will likely find a way to continue it. This Jumanji 4 could simply be the last appearance of this specific group of actors, with a new cast potentially taking over in the future. As demonstrated by Warner Bros.’ Conjuring Universe, a film being labeled as “final” doesn’t always mean the franchise is truly over. Ultimately, financial success will likely determine if more Jumanji movies are made, even if Johnson doesn’t return, meaning fans might still get further adventures.
