New Look at Man of Tomorrow Sets Up DC’s Anti-Superman Weapon After 60 Years

Filming is currently underway for the new Superman movie, Man of Tomorrow, and it appears a classic Superman foe’s weapon will make its debut after six decades. The film will feature an unlikely alliance between Superman and Lex Luthor, as they must join forces to defeat the even more powerful villain, Brainiac. Recent footage from the set reveals action sequences, Lex Luthor sporting his iconic green armor, and hints of a cosmic threat. Notably, a weapon first seen in Superman comics 60 years ago—the Nuclear Kryptonite Ray-Gun—has also been spotted.

What Is the Nuclear Kryptonite Ray-Gun?

Lex Luthor first unveiled his Nuclear Kryptonite Ray-Gun, a weapon designed to fire Green Kryptonite rays, over 60 years ago in Action Comics #282 (1961). Unfortunately, when he attempted to use it against Supergirl in Action Comics #286 (1962), the ray backfired, and he was fatally struck. However, Supergirl believed that death was too harsh a punishment and instead revived Luthor, sending him back to prison to serve a life sentence.

Don’t anticipate seeing this plot point in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow film. The Nuclear Kryptonite Ray-Gun will probably be another classic DC Comics item James Gunn introduces. It’s more likely that Lex Luthor created this as a contingency weapon for ARGUS – a way to neutralize Superman if necessary. This could be just one of several weapons Luthor designed for ARGUS. He previously built the Energy Disruptor, which could remove superheroes’ powers – a device from the DC Animated Universe. He also created the Deconstructor, featured in LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, which also used a Green Kryptonite crystal as its power source.

The recent reveal of the Nuclear Kryptonite Ray-Gun suggests that ARGUS, Rick Flag Sr., and Lex Luthor are still preparing for the possibility of Superman becoming a threat. We’ve also seen Lex Luthor sporting his iconic battlesuit. However, with Brainiac’s arrival looming, their plans could backfire, potentially leaving Earth vulnerable without its strongest defender.
