You might have heard about a new Lord of the Rings movie called The Hunt for Gollum, but there’s another one in the works! Warner Bros. is developing The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, and the writing team is surprisingly star-studded: Stephen Colbert is co-writing the screenplay with his son, Peter McGee, and Philippa Boyens, a veteran writer and producer of the Lord of the Rings films.
The new story begins 14 years after the events of The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. While Frodo sailed to the Undying Lands, his Hobbit companions – Sam, Merry, and Pippin – stayed behind. The film will show them reflecting on their adventures, and then tell a story that takes place during The Fellowship of the Ring. Specifically, it will adapt chapters 3 through 8 of the book, which weren’t included in the first Lord of the Rings movie.
The Lord Of The Rings Franchise Is Stuck In The Past

The decision for the next Lord of the Rings film, following The Hunt for Gollum, is both unexpected and disappointing. It repeats the same issue that plagued that movie: keeping the franchise tied to the characters and events of Peter Jackson’s original trilogy. These films center on characters whose stories were already complete and beautifully concluded.
Are more stories about Frodo and Sam necessary? While the new films could be exciting, it’s tough to make a strong case for them at this point. The casting also presents a challenge: the movie, Shadow of the Past, will probably feature Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan, and Billy Boyd both in scenes after Return of the King and flashbacks to The Fellowship of the Ring.
Elijah Wood is likely to reprise his role as Frodo, potentially alongside a new take on Gollum, and given the 25-year gap since the original films, he’d probably need to appear much younger through visual effects. While de-aging technology has improved, it can still look unrealistic. Another possibility is recasting the roles, but that could upset fans—as seen with rumors about a different actor potentially playing Aragorn.
What’s most striking about these films is that both stories take place during the events of The Fellowship of the Ring, essentially creating stories within the larger narrative. This approach makes the plot feel stretched thin for full-length movies and carries a significant risk: they need to feel like natural extensions of the original masterpiece, which is a very high bar to clear. Because the timelines overlap, audiences will expect a seamless connection, and achieving that will be incredibly challenging.
The Lord of the Rings franchise has faced challenges moving forward even before the recent films. While The Hobbit trilogy was financially successful, it wasn’t well-received critically. Many thought the story ended there, but it returned with The Rings of Power on Prime Video, which has also received mixed reactions. That series, too, keeps revisiting characters central to the original trilogy – like Galadriel, Gandalf, and Sauron – even though the timeline could have supported a fresh direction. War of the Rohirrim, though set further in the past, was still a prequel focused on a key location from the main trilogy (Helm’s Deep) and ultimately didn’t resonate with audiences.
One reason for the limitations is that the studios don’t have the rights to all of Tolkien’s writings – works like The Silmarillion are unavailable. Even with full access, they could create better stories by exploring different parts of Middle-earth and moving beyond simply recreating the feeling of the first three films. Currently, it’s similar to the situation with Star Wars for much of the last decade, where the focus was too much on pleasing fans with familiar references instead of trying something new – although Starfighter suggests Star Wars is starting to change that.
The Lord of the Rings movies started strong with three fantastic films, but everything that followed hasn’t lived up to those originals. While there’s potential with the new projects and talented people working on them, it would be more thrilling to see something completely fresh instead of revisiting The Fellowship of the Ring yet again.
The movie The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled to come out on December 17, 2027. As of now, there’s no confirmed release date for Shadow of the Past.
