It’s been a long time since a really great Lord of the Rings video game came out. While recent games like Tales of the Shire haven’t been very well-received, fans can always revisit classic options. There’s a large selection of Lord of the Rings board games to choose from, including titles like The One Ring role-playing game and more recent releases like Fate of the Fellowship. Now, a new, officially licensed Lord of the Rings tabletop game is on the way, and early signs suggest it will be excellent.
D20 Culture and Warner Bros. Discovery are creating a new tabletop game called Foes of Middle-earth, based on The Lord of the Rings. Its Kickstarter campaign was incredibly successful, reaching its funding goal in only 10 minutes! This means fans will soon be able to experience a new, cinematic game featuring beloved characters like Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and Frodo, alongside the iconic enemies they face.
Foes of Middle-earth Fully Funded on Kickstarter, Bringing a New Lord of the Rings Tabletop Experience to Life
Foes of Middle-earth is the first game resulting from a new collaboration between D20 Culture and Warner Bros., and it’s just the first of many licensed projects they have planned. It’s off to a great start – the game was fully funded on Kickstarter almost instantly and has since raised more than ten times its initial funding goal. The Kickstarter campaign ends on March 15th, so you still have 15 days to pre-order a copy. But what exactly is Foes of Middle-earth?
Foes of Middle-earth is a new cooperative board game where players take on the roles of famous characters from the Lord of the Rings. The game includes 22 detailed miniatures, including a large 8.3-inch Balrog, and pre-painted figures of Frodo, Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas. Players will work together, using these figures, to navigate dangerous locations and complete challenges in the world of Arda.
In Foes of Middle-earth, gameplay unfolds in three stages: exploring the land, fighting mini-bosses, and ultimately facing a difficult final boss. Each adventure is built from randomly arranged tiles that reveal different locations from Tolkien’s Middle-earth, ensuring every playthrough feels unique. During exploration, you’ll encounter enemies drawn from a deck of menace cards. Be careful though – attracting Sauron’s attention can lead to a quick defeat! If you survive, you’ll have the chance to battle one final, epic boss and claim victory.

I’m really excited about how this game is shaping up! It’s going to have that classic tabletop RPG feel, where you earn XP and use it to unlock new skills. Plus, the Kickstarter campaign has been amazing! We started with four characters, but now we’re getting Arwen and Boromir too. And if we can hit $650,000, they’re adding Sam – seriously, he’s my favorite character in Lord of the Rings, so that would be awesome!
The Kickstarter campaign for Foes of Middle-earth finishes on March 11th. Backers can expect to receive the game around June 2027, so it will be a bit of a wait. You can find more information about Foes of Middle-earth and support the project on its Kickstarter page.
