As a gamer, I’ve always been a huge fan of The Lord of the Rings – the books, the movies, everything! The video games have been a bit of a mixed bag though, with some really great ones and others that… well, didn’t quite hit the mark. But now, there’s a new report saying another The Lord of the Rings game is in the works, and it sounds promising! Apparently, it might be as big as Hogwarts Legacy, or at least take some cues from how that game was made. Middle-earth is just begging for a fantastic video game story, and I’m really curious to see if they’ll adapt a classic tale or create something totally new. Right now, details are pretty scarce, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for something special!
Insider Gaming reports that a new The Lord of the Rings game is in development. According to a source, the project is expected to receive around $100 million in funding from the Abu Dhabi Investment Office. The publication also suggests this is just part of the total budget, hinting that the game will likely have a significantly larger overall investment.
I’ve been hearing whispers about a new Lord of the Rings game for a while now, and it sounds like it’s finally going to be officially announced soon. Details are still pretty scarce, but the word is it’s going to be a third-person action game. Apparently, the developers are aiming for it to “compete with Hogwarts Legacy“. That actually makes a lot of sense – both franchises are huge, they’re aimed at similar players, and Hogwarts Legacy was a massive hit when it came out a few years back.
The agreement hasn’t been finalized yet, so the Abu Dhabi Investment Office might withdraw its funding. The deal involves multiple studios, including Embracer, which owns the video game rights to The Lord of the Rings intellectual property, and Revenge. However, this doesn’t automatically mean these companies will *develop* the game, because Embracer has previously allowed other studios to use the IP, like with The Lord of the Rings: Gollum.
The studios involved haven’t confirmed or denied this rumor and haven’t offered any statements. A new Lord of the Rings game wouldn’t be unexpected, especially considering the success of titles like Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. Despite some recent games in the franchise not performing as well, fans remain optimistic.
Well-known franchises are getting more and more video game adaptations over time. The Harry Potter universe, for example, has recently seen releases like Hogwarts Legacy and Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions. The Halloween franchise is scheduled to receive a new horror game in 2026, alongside Hellraiser: Revival. Given the huge fan base of franchises like The Lord of the Rings, we can expect a continued flow of these kinds of games – and plenty of chances to delve into their detailed and expansive worlds.
