As a huge fan of Middle-earth, I just heard some news about The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum – it looks like they’re recasting one of the characters we all love. It’s confirmed now, which is a bit of a shock, but I’m curious to see what they do with it.
What did Andy Serkis say in his latest LOTR: The Hunt for Gollum update?
News surfaced in December 2025 that Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema were planning to find a new actor to play Aragorn. Viggo Mortensen is well-known for his iconic performance as Aragorn in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings movies.
Aragorn will appear in the upcoming film, The Hunt for Gollum. However, Viggo Mortensen, the actor who originally played him, won’t be involved this time.
Andy Serkis recently told ScreenRant that a different actor will portray Aragorn in the upcoming film, The Hunt for Gollum.
Serkis acknowledged there’s a lot of discussion about who will take on the role, but confirmed they’ve begun the process of finding a new actor.
Serkis didn’t reveal which actors the studio was looking at for the role. He did, however, confirm that Kate Winslet will be in the film, though her role is currently secret, and he gave a quick overview of where the story takes place.
We’re keeping most details under wraps for now, but as many people likely know, our movie is set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It’s called The Hunt for Gollum, and it’s a chase both physically and mentally – a journey where characters are hunting Gollum, but he’s also battling his own inner demons. We’re almost ready to release it, and we’re really excited – it’s going to be a thrilling experience.
Ian McKellen hinted that the upcoming film, The Hunt for Gollum, might include appearances by Gandalf and Frodo. While both McKellen and Elijah Wood – who played those characters in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy – haven’t officially confirmed or denied their involvement in Andy Serkis’ new movie, the possibility remains open.
Andy Serkis will direct, produce, and star in The Hunt for Gollum. He’s collaborating with Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou, who are all writing the script. Peter Jackson is also returning as a producer, joining Walsh and Boyens in that role.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum arrives in theaters on December 17, 2027.
