New Lord of the Rings Rumor Hints at Fan-Favorite Character Being Recast for 2027 Sequel

Ten years after the Hobbit movies finished, the world of Lord of the Rings is returning to cinemas. A new film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, is scheduled for release in December 2027. Andy Serkis, who famously played Gollum, will be directing. This movie is a standalone story set during the events of The Fellowship of the Ring, focusing on Gandalf’s search for Gollum after discovering Bilbo had the One Ring. With popular characters from the original trilogy expected to appear (Ian McKellen has suggested Frodo and Gandalf will make cameos), fans are eager to know if the original actors will return. However, it looks like at least one of them won’t be involved.

Viggo Mortensen, who played Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings, will reportedly not reprise the role in the upcoming film The Hunt for Gollum. According to Knight Edge Media, the filmmakers plan to cast a younger actor in the part. However, this hasn’t been officially announced by the film’s director, Andy Serkis, or anyone else connected to the project, so fans should view this news as unconfirmed for now.

Recasting Aragorn Makes Sense, But It’s Very Risky

Figuring out how to bring Aragorn back in The Hunt for Gollum presented a real challenge for the filmmakers. If the rumors are true, recasting the role might be the best solution. Viggo Mortensen is now in his late 60s, meaning they’d have to use digital technology to make him look younger, as he did in The Fellowship of the Ring. While this technology is improving, it’s still not perfect. It’s expensive, which would significantly increase the film’s already large budget, and studios are currently trying to reduce costs. Plus, maintaining realistic de-aging effects throughout an entire film is difficult. Using it for a quick flashback is one thing, but Aragorn is expected to have a major role in The Hunt for Gollum.

Replacing Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn makes practical sense, but it’s also a risky move. Mortensen is so strongly associated with the character that it’s hard to imagine anyone else in the role. Whoever Andy Serkis chooses will inevitably be compared to Mortensen, and if audiences don’t accept the new actor as Aragorn, the film The Hunt for Gollum could struggle to gain traction.

It’s common for popular characters to be played by different actors. James Bond, Batman, and Spider-Man, for example, have all had multiple portrayals, and often those changes have been successful. Fans readily accepted Mark Ruffalo replacing Edward Norton as the Hulk in the Marvel movies. However, recasting doesn’t always work out. The film Solo: A Star Wars Story featured Alden Ehrenreich as a young Han Solo, but despite a decent performance by Ehrenreich, the movie wasn’t well-received by audiences and was a box office failure.

Whether the rumored casting choice for young Aragorn will be well-received remains to be seen, but fans can be confident that the team behind The Hunt for Gollum is dedicated to making a great film that fits seamlessly into the Lord of the Rings series. Director Andy Serkis is working with the original creative team – Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens – who are all producing (with Walsh and Boyens also co-writing the script). They’re taking their time to ensure the movie lives up to the high standards of the franchise, and they understand the importance of handling the recasting of Aragorn carefully and respectfully.
