New Narnia Star Breaks Silence & Officially Confirms Casting in Greta Gerwig’s Reboot, 7 Months Later

With just over a year until Greta Gerwig’s new The Chronicles of Narnia films arrive, the actors are starting to share details. Gerwig, known for directing Barbie, is reimagining the classic stories by C.S. Lewis for Netflix, and filming began in August 2025. Although Disney previously made Narnia films in the 2000s, this version will be different, starting with the book The Magician’s Nephew. This is the first story in terms of Narnia’s timeline, even though it was the sixth book published. The films will explore the creation of Narnia by Aslan, and take place before the Pevensie children ever discover it.

There’s been a lot of speculation about the cast of the upcoming Narnia film, including rumors that Meryl Streep might voice Aslan. One important character is Jadis, who transforms into the White Witch. Actress Emma Mackey, known for Sex Education, was reported to have landed the role back in April, and she’s recently addressed the news, though she hasn’t revealed much. In an interview with MovieWeb, Mackey shared: “It’s a wonderful process so far, and a real adventure. I have a lot of respect for Greta [Gerwig, the director], she’s a friend and an inspiration, and I feel lucky to be working on one of her projects.”

Emma Mackey & Greta Gerwig Are Great For Narnia’s Reboot

Alexandra Mackey, recently seen in Barbie, is quickly becoming a prominent actress, and this role feels like a major step forward for her. She’s a great fit to play Jadis, the White Witch. This film, The Magician’s Nephew, explores Jadis’s origins, showing how she became the villain fans know from The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. We’ll see her backstory, visit her home world of Charn, and discover how she arrived in Narnia. Mackey seems ideal for portraying the character with depth and complexity, while still capturing the powerful, cold presence audiences expect, setting the stage for her future appearances in the series.

Greta Gerwig seems like a perfect choice to direct the upcoming Narnia films. Her previous work on movies like Lady Bird, Little Women, and Barbie demonstrates her ability to handle stories about growing up, historical settings, fantastical worlds, book adaptations, and large-scale productions – all skills that will be valuable for bringing C.S. Lewis’ novels to life. She’s also already gathered a talented cast, including Daniel Craig, Carey Mulligan, and Denis Gough.

I’m really excited to hear Greta Gerwig is going to direct at least two Narnia films! Netflix is clearly hoping this is a huge win for them, and their release plan is interesting. The Magician’s Nephew will actually hit IMAX for two weeks around Thanksgiving 2026 before landing on Netflix at Christmas. If it all works out, this could be a massive franchise for the streamer, potentially lasting for years and covering all seven books in the series.

Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is scheduled to release in theaters on November 26, 2026.
