As a movie critic, I’ve got to say that Madea is back and ruling the streaming scene once again! Tyler Perry’s latest creation, “Madea’s Destination Wedding,” has been a blockbuster hit for Netflix, climbing to the top of their charts just one week after its release.
However, the film has received some mixed reviews, with Rotten Tomatoes giving it a mere 15%. Critics have argued that this latest Madea installment lacks genuine humor and feels more like an advertisement for its stunning Atlantis backdrop in the Bahamas.
But despite these criticisms, Flix Patrol has reported that the film has been holding strong at number one on Netflix’s Top 10 list for the past week, only dropping to second place today within the United States. Globally, it stands proudly at third place as of today. So, whether you love or loathe Madea, it seems she’s here to stay!
In the latest addition to the Tyler Perry series, titled “Madea’s Destination Wedding“, we find ourselves. This film is the most recent production from the prolific director and actor, who has a multi-year, primary streaming agreement with Netflix. Many of his recent films, including the recently released “Straw“, have been exclusively released on this platform.
However, the Madea franchise once reigned supreme at the box office, with a total of nine titles from the series having been shown in cinemas. The first film to make its way onto the big screen was 2005’s “Diary of a Mad Black Woman“, which garnered an impressive $50.6 million globally on a budget of only $5.5 million. Its sequel, “Madea Goes to Jail“, generated an even more significant domestic revenue of $90.5 million, as it was not released internationally.
Perry’s “Madea” films have been met with mixed reviews from critics, but the character’s enduring appeal has kept audiences coming back for more with each new installment. In “Madea’s Wedding Journey,” Tyler Perry’s Madea travels to the Bahamas along with her family when Tiffany (portrayed by Diamond White) suddenly decides to get married in a destination wedding. During their stay, Tiffany starts to doubt her fiancé, Zavier (played by Xavier Smalls), and notices strange behavior from her mother, leading her to question the authenticity of the marriage. The film, starring Perry, was both written and directed by him.
Currently, it’s uncertain when Tyler Perry might reprise his iconic character and series. However, considering the success of “Madea’s Destination Wedding”, there’s a strong chance another Madea film is in development. Given Perry’s speedy scriptwriting and swift production process, which sometimes sees films completed in under a month, it’s plausible we could see a new Madea movie quite soon.
As well as portraying Madea, Perry has also starred in movies such as “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows,” “Gone Girl,” “Don’t Look Up,” and “Alex Cross.” Additionally, he has been involved with “Paw Patrol: The Movie,” “Those Who Wish Me Dead,” “Vice,” “The Star,” and “Brain on Fire.
You can now watch Madea’s Destination Wedding exclusively on Netflix. But if you want to catch the rest of Tyler Perry’s Madea movies, you’ll need to use multiple streaming platforms. For instance, Diary of a Mad Black Woman can be found on Hulu, while A Madea Homecoming is a Netflix exclusive. Many other Madea films are also accessible through Prime Video and Peacock.
